7. His plan for economic development was to invite companies to move assembling industry to the country. This requires lots of energy and they’ve calculated with cheap energy coming from russia (gas and also nuclear). Obviously it is now seem to be impossible but they are still trying.

   Also, he tends to be the voice of various western european multi national companies who also deeply f*cked due to the loss of relatively cheap energy and raw resources from russia.

If Hungary was always excellent at something, it’s biting the hand that feeds them, choosing the wrong allies, then complaining how international diplomatic channels usually bring a negative outcome. And the more the average Hungarian is made to piss against the wind, the merrier he is in his misery. It’s called “magyar virtus” (Hungarian virtue). Make Hungarians feel attacked and isolated, offer a way out (not through diplomacy and business dealings but with even more isolation and self defense narrative) and you’ll get a sufficient number of scared voters on your side. This is the voter side of the story.

    The other one is economic dependency. Which of course could have been reduced, but I guess it doesn’t take too much of a push to bribe and/or intimidate the right politicians into not doing it.

27. Let me try to give you a ‘good faith’ answer since the others already cover what the sub thinks in general. Basically you could say that Orban is not supporting Russia, but more like he’s doing a balancing act to get the best of both worlds; the free market of the EU and the protection of NATO while still doing business with Russia, particularly relating to energy import and other energy projects. What is interpreted as “support for Russia” by the west, is framed as “pragmatic business relations” by our government. Another factor is that Orban has tied the energy sourcing of the country to Russia so much, that it is hard to cut ties, but he cannot admit this, so he keeps going with the “doing what’s best for the country” narrative.

28. This is called “hintapolitika” in Hungarian. Basically, he wants the EU money, so he voted all the sanctions. However, he wants the russian energy, so he says “sanctions bad”. Many time he says something and does the opposite. He tries to do a balance, where he gets everything.

36. Despite the interpretation of the liberals and socialists, Orban does not support Russia. He does care about Hungary only. Without the sanctions, inflation and energy prices would drop sharply. That’s what he says, and that’s true.

    In other words, he does not support Russia, but he does not care much about Ukraine either, if the help would mean inconvenience for Hungary. After all, he is the Hungarian prime minister, his job is to protect Hungary.

38. You won’t get banned here for asking this, I however will be downvoted. Not that I give a fuck.I’m not pro-Orban, haven’t voted for him, never will. But I don’t support the sanctions either. Doesn’t really seem like they are working, not as intended anyway.

    I have two counterquestions, if you don’t mind:

    – how long are we planning to keep these sanctions? Until Russia fails? What if it takes 10 more years, or never happens? Do we have a plan for that?

    – why did we not sanction the US when they went to the Middle-East and stirred all kinds of nasty shit up there?

39. Every time he gets reelected he starts doing more stupid shit. Then when he sees that he gets even more votes next time, he is reassured that all he has to do is continue doing more stupid shit. It’s working great for him, a good strategy I must say. From a power and control point of view, his actions make perfect sense. What I don’t get is why people keep reelecting him…

40. The calculations what he and his party made was wrong. The economy does no do as good as they expected. The prices went brrr. Inflation is the highest in Europe.
    Now he sees clearly, he can not deal with this. His only hope is requesting to lift the sanctions. He thinks when the sanctions will be gone, the inflation will drop, the energy prises will drop,

    I am not really sure about that, but who I am to question our supreme leader.

    Probably the big russia (and Putin) love has something to do with it as well. But again, who am I to suspect such things.

41. Thank you everybody for all your answers, I really learned a lot even from the not so serious ones, and I kind of got an idea of what is happening. I know things are very complex but I just needed to have some basic directions and see what Hungarians think about this.

He tends to influence old and undereducated people who vote for him and most us here are not from those groups.

    The only difference is that we’re still part of the European economical sphere, and we can’t be ousted forcefully from the EU, thus our government can be an even bigger slimy dickbag than Lukashenka because Orbán has a lot more room for political manouver.
