Hello!

I’m going to spend a few days next month in Wien and I want to travel with my car, a VW Golf 5 (euro4) equipped with brand new “all seasons” tyres.

Question 1:

I read that in some areas (including Wien) I may need a sticker like this one:

[https://www.environmentalbadge.com/environmental-zone-vienna/?\_ga=2.248068807.1319984928.1673986460-1322833203.1673986460](https://www.environmentalbadge.com/environmental-zone-vienna/?_ga=2.248068807.1319984928.1673986460-1322833203.1673986460)

But I’m not sure if it is mandatory considering my car. Do I need it?

Question 2:

Am I going to have problems with “all seasons” tyres? My understanding is that they are considered at the same level of winter tyres if the are in good conditions. Is it correct?

Question 3:
So I must buy the Vignette, is there anything else I need to know?

Thanks!

  1. * The deciding factor is your minimum thread depth on the tires. And they also need either ET, ML or MPT markings. Also, while they mandatory, they’re only mandatory in winter conditions. If it’s 15° and sunny nobody cares. I recently saw a Porsche driving around, which 100% had no winter tires.

    * Parking in Vienna sucks and can be quite expensive. I‘d suggest just staying at a „P+R“ (park and ride) garage on the outskirts of the city. They’re only €3-4/day compared to inner city parking, which can be as much as €3-4/hour. Public transport is quite good and not really that expensive. Vienna is also quite walkable , since most tourists sights are in and around the first district.

  2. Come by train or bus if in any way possible. Almost all of Vienna is a short-stay parking zone from 9am to 10pm where parking costs more than 2€ per hour and you as a foreigner aren’t allowed to park for more than 2 hours.

  3. I didn’t know the sticker, but reading in the internet, it only applies to delivery trucks. It doesn’t apply to your car.

All season tires are only accepted if they have the inspiration M+S, M.S. or M&S. If it is warm without snow or ice, than any normal tires are ok, as long as they are in good condition.

For the Vignette there are 3 options, 10 days, 2 months or 1 year. You will probably only need the 10 days.

If you decide to drive anywhere in the city, you will have a hard time with parking.

  4. Ad 1: You say that your car is a VW Golf, then most likely you don’t need it (exception: it has been legally classified as a truck, category N1, but I doubt any Golf exists as N1)

Ad 2: If you stay in Vienna, youre alright with all-season tyres as long as the thread depth is 4mm or more (should be the case for new ones)
