I just got my work visa and my wife’s dependent visa at hand. I have read the twiki / FAQ which has been very useful so far. However, I got some specific questions regarding registration, and therefore, I seek your help. My work contract would be starting from February 1st, so I plan to arrive Germany on 31st January (VISA starts from 31st Jan.). Since it is mandatory to register myself and my wife at the municipal office, I tried to book an appointment today at the Municipal office of Darmstadt, where I booked an apartment (company housing), for my stay (starting from **31st Jan**). However, the earlier date I could get at Municipal office at Darmstadt is on **8th of March (more than 1 month)**. So, how big of a problem is this gap b/w my Arrival and Appointment for Registration? Q: Should I ask my company to change date of Joining and also change apartment booking dates? Or is it okay to arrive at Darmstadt and wait for my appointment in the next month?
Also, in the same website of Darmstadt municipal office I see options of “pre-move registration” option (see screen shots: [https://imgur.com/2LPzTDv](https://imgur.com/2LPzTDv) ). So, I tried to fill this form (2nd “Zuzuges” option) with my information (address, Id, etc), But I could not set the date of move to 31st January. The date has to be in the past, not in the future (this is a bit confusing). If I check the box, do that means I am objecting my data to those groups / organisations or Allowing them ? Q: Do I have to / or is it optional fill this “pre-move registration” (after I arrive to Darmstadt) and, whether it would help to get appointment at the municipality at earlier date than March?

Guten Tag! The Anmeldungs appointment being late is fine, the municipality is aware of the appointment issue. Nonetheless be polite and say “sorry, there wasn’t an earlier appointment bookable” when you show up, as they can make your life difficult if you annoy them. Just skip this pre registration form god only knows what that is. If they complain that you would have absolutely needed it, simply say you did fill it out.

As the other early commenter said, they are well aware that getting an appointment within two weeks is near-impossible right now, so nobody will bat an eye at you coming in several weeks later, especially if you made the appointment as soon as possible. Maybe have your landlord give you a dated confirmation of occupancy so they can see that you actually got your application ready right away, but otherwise, you’re worrying too much already 🙂
PS: arriving in a new country is a big move, it sucks that your visa doesn’t start until the 31st Jan otherwise I would say come a few days earlier so you don’t have to begin work the literal day after moving to a new country. Depending on your relationship with your employer and the vibe you got, I would ask to begin the following Monday, or at least have them go easy on you the first 3 days…
