And there’s the rub. There’s no way of being sure what way someone will react if you insert yourself into a situation – especially when they know that you know they’re being a creep / predator / danger.
Not that the idea isn’t noble or that it’s a good thing to do nothing – but you’re taking a chance by intervening.
I wonder if there’s any legs to the idea of asking for “Angela” (or some substitute code) on public transport, as is done in bars and so on, to alert others that you need help / intervention / security or police to be called.
>An advertising campaign on buses and trains, and at stops and stations, says people who witness this behaviour could make a distraction by asking the person being targeted a simple question such as “What’s the next stop?” or “Do you have the time?”.
As a middle aged bloke, if I ask a woman on the train a question out of nowhere, she’s probably going to think “oh great, now there are two of them!”.
While it’s a good thing everyone needs to seriously evaluate the situation before having a go. Getting stabbed sucks I wouldn’t recommend it.
This campaign is happening at the same time as the government are looking to remove staff from onboard trains and at railway stations.
I’m sure it’s a complete coincidence though.
It’s slightly worrying that members of the public are being encouraged to get involved by an official campaign. Don’t get me wrong, it’s commendable to step in, but it puts you at risk and can sometimes escalate a situation from verbal to physical.
Why can’t a woman just walk up to a guy and say can you pretend to be my BF? 99% of the time the guy will know what to do. Or say to someone “can you pretend that you know me? I’m getting creepy vibes from that guy”
No thanks. This will just end up being a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation.
“if it is safe to do so”? How can anyone know if it’s safe to insert themself into that type of situation? Unless it’s a loon walking around naked, you don’t know what they’re packing.
If you’re going to do this, you need to be very confident that you could subdue the offender in hand-to-hand, or be OK with the risk of getting severely beaten or stabbed.
One of my friends friends at uni had his eye socket (orbital) broken when he tried to stop someone getting sexually harassed on the tram in birmingham. Hes now has two titanium plates holding it together. You never know how these nutters will react if you intervene and if you get assaulted what are the cops going to do?
To every man reading this, do not be bullied or guilted into believing it is your responsibility to physically intervene in these situations.
Just because you are a man it is not your sacred duty to get into a physical confrontation with other men who are behaving badly. Maybe the other guy is carrying a knife and you get stabbed to death. Maybe you get knocked out and suffer permanent brain damage. Maybe you knock the other guy out and he suffers permanent brain damage and you go to jail and then get sued by his family. Maybe the victim is actually the guy’s girlfriend and she sides with the abuser when the police arrive.
If you see something happening just text the transport police and they will typically be there on the next stop and they can handle it. You know, because it’s their job and they’re trained to do it.
No.
It urges passengers to be ‘active bystanders’ in sexual harassment against women.
It makes zero mention, none, zippo, zilch, nada mention of sexual harassment towards men.
Once again, in this New Age of Third Wave Equality, men are still hidebound to chivalry, but women can remain impassive observers of wrongdoing.
Such is life, I guess.
This seems like a wonderful opportunity for us all to get shanked by the local crackheads of London.
Call the police but unless you are very sure you can handle the individual physically that’s as far as I’d go. All it takes is a knife and you are now in a very shit situation.
People should be allowed to protect themselves if threatened by others. Not this silly notion that by-standers might speak up. You want to be able to mace the perp minimally to protect yourself. If the polis are not gonna protect you then you need to protect yourself.
Pitty tis doesn’t include protection of men. Or even mentuons women harsassing other women. Nope, one agasin feminism only paints one picture.
Yeah, no. If you get involved you never know how either party will react. It could lead to violence or it could lead to a harassment lawsuit if your actions are taken the wrong way. Not worth the hassle.
If I caught wind of something happening… I’d just step in. If I get punched then so be it, but fuck standing by and letting it happen.
I have never seen harassment or abuse on the underground, even when its packed everyone just stands there silently
If someone was being abusive it would be easy to notice I am sure

“Please have a go, but don’t”
They’ve cut public services to the bone and are now asking the public to do the job of the Transport Police. Pathetic
They were innocent bystanders. Now, you just think about that term. Innocent… bystanders. Because that’s exactly what they were. We know they were bystanders. Nobody’s disputing that. So, how can a bystander be guilty? No such thing! Have you ever heard of a guilty bystander? No, because you cannot be a bystander and be guilty! Bystanders, are by definition, innocent. That is the nature of by-standing. But, no. They want to change nature here. They want to create a whole new animal; the guilty bystanders. Don’t you let him do it. Only you… can stop them.
Looking at how dangerous London has become ill be watching and reporting but thats about it im afraid.
This is my position on this. (Coming from an average sized man).
If the offending male looks physically weaker than me, on his own, and non-mental, I’ll warn him off.
Otherwise, er… I’ll call the police from a safe distance away, and that’s that.
Nah fuck it. Not getting involved. More than a good chance one of these london urban feral yutes will carry a knife or even worse.
Not worth risking at all.
Watch this campaign fold when a white knight becomes a dead knight.
When the police can drag themselves away from raping people long enough to arrest other criminals I might be bothered to help them
