American Football is not a very popular sport over here. It is still the most known US sport (for example: nobody here understands baseball) – some NFL games are even shown on live TV – at 3am or so. If it were a soccer game, F1 race or skiing things would be different and the soldier would be more enthusiastic.
Also many austrians are not very fond of our military („Bundesheer“) as its wasting money on useless jets (Eurofighter scandal) and is underfunded in many other areas. Also we still have constription, so every young austrian man has to waste 6-9 months of his life in the military or social-service.
