Newport: Plans to switch off street lights in new budget

  1. I’d like more places where crime is low enough to allow it to do the same. There is incredible amounts of light polution

  2. Why when they were replacing the lights with LEDs did they not put in heat sensors and Wi-Fi connectivity then lights could be intelligently turned on/off when required and net net the cost of the wifi/sensors/intelligent controls would have been paid back in a year. This would keep people and cars safe whilst dramatically reducing costs and light pollution

I hear that in the US they are even trialing changing the colour of street lamps when emergency services are called to speed up response times. A little fore thought could have saved a ton of money for decades

  3. Alarmist Headline – I’ll save you the click.

Council plans to switch off half of their streetlights midnight and 6am.

They already switch off a quarter of them anyway, so would in effect increase the number of lights off between these times from 25% to 50%.
