Hmm… That’s a bit sad really. Just goes to show how far the UK has fallen in the last few years.
Still, it’s what the majority wanted I guess.
>I want to awaken you to an opportunity’, Penny Mordaunt tells US audience
Sounds like she’s selling timeshares.
>The most critical partner for us is the US. For the US to wait to seize this opportunity would be to all our detriment,
Notice me, senpai!
Brexit has largely been a failure but this kind of debasement is embarrassing.
>Tony Spisak, head of policy at the Tony Blair Institute, called it: “A solid candidate for the most embarrassing speech delivered by a government minister in 2021.”
Begging is always a great way to begin a negotiation. Yay us!
Pissing off your former best trading partner is not a great way to invite new trade partners.
Resort to begging when you realize you have no leverage. Classic Tory move!
Besides the fact the US is biding its time to see just how bad it gets for us over here, then they will pounce with a deal that benefits them more than it does us.
Welcome to Tory Britain!
“I know we messed up with our ex but this time it’ll be different”
A relative of Penny Mordaunt, Terence Mordaunt, is the owner of Bristol port and will benefit greatly from a US trade deal as goods flow through his port. He was a donor to the Conservative Party and to Vote Leave, and chair of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, the UK’s leading climate change denial organization.
Service related agreements can be done with individual States, though shouldn’t be considered any kind of trade deal.
Actual trade deal is probably another Presidential election and then several more years away. There’s legislative hurdles here to contend with. You don’t want to agree to something that major without very careful consideration.
Trump was key to making Brexit work. He would have pushed through that US/UK trade deal posthaste. But with Biden in, he’s probably relegated us to the back of the line.
The UK has approx 60m population. The EU had approx 450m. Why would anyone want to prioritise a deal with the UK and potentially jeopardise the deal with 450m. This is why the UK’s membership of the EU was so important because in a globalised world, size matters. As Churchill said; ” you can’t negotiate with a tiger when your head is in its mouth”.
In the current US political climate trade deals aren’t a priority for anyone.
