There’s valid, profound concern about the new Variant. And Sturgeon has asked people to reduce the amount of contacts they will have in the run up to Christmas.

Sturgeon urges Scots to ‘stay home’ amid ‘profound concern’ over Covid

Yet, 30,000 people will be going to Edinburgh to celebrate Hogmanay. With the only restriction being a negative lateral flow on the day, a test which has been hit and miss before.

It makes absolutely no sense.

On one hand restricting smaller events, that many people need for their mental health especially after the year we’ve had. On the other hand, letting this massive super spreader event go ahead. Especially with a more infectious variant that we don’t know enough about.

Even London cancelled their fireworks festival. I expected better from Scotland than this.

  1. The differences between the various devolved govts and Westminster has been about (better) presentation rather than any great change in policy.

Hogmanay will not be restricted unless a UK lockdown is announced.

  2. One factor might be that politicians are now far better informed than twelve months ago in how difficult it is for the police to try to enforce restrictions, how different segments of the public respond to restrictions (and guidance), and how the courts have a tendency to treat the imposition of fines. Presumably you’ve been able to reach a decision to not go out, based on other information, and they’ll expect many more will do the same. And likewise, a sizeable chunk of those who’ll be going out, might still go out even if they were told not to.

There are no restrictions on any events, just WFH reinstated and advice to ‘choose events carefully’
