If they are allowed to get Ukraine because they have nukes, soon enough China will claim Taiwan and North Korea will claim South Korea using the same method. I don’t think a Russian defeat wouldn’t be taken laying down. This conflict is far more likely to escalate far more before any conclusion happens.
My personal prediction is that if Crimea is threatened or worse taken then I believe that will probably give Russia justification to use nuclear weapons on Kyiv. Not necessarily a nuclear war mind you.
Crimea is far too important for Russia and technically considered Russian land. Putin can’t afford to lose that much face. Losing the 2014 borders would probably have him killed, thus an escalation will happen before that happened.
So assuming Ukraine manage to get over the river, march toward Crimea or even manage to take it. Kyiv is pretty likely to get nuked at that point. How NATO chooses to respond to the nuking of Kyiv is what decides the fate of the world.

Nuclear war can only start if Russia is facing an existential threat: USA and their allies are very strict regarding the rules of engagements with foreign weapons, this is why attack in Russian territory are only done with soviet/Ukrainian weapons/drones, even in Crimea on that big flagship vessel it was Ukrainian neptune missiles.

Second, ask yourself: What is the point of the threats made by a pawn ? To really start a nuclear war or to scare the public opinion and stop Ukraine from getting our weapon ?
Now practicality: one tactical nuke on Ukraine didn’t change anything militarily. Frontline is about 1000km and to cover it all about 100 low yield tactical nukes needed. Also nuke is very different from atomic station and radiation level after nuclear explosion drops to relatively safe levels after couple of weeks. At the same time political rage against russia will be unprecendented. Also if russia nukes are at the same state as the rest of their army…lol
