Microsoft reportedly planning thousands of job cuts – [The reported cuts would equate to about 175 jobs in Ireland]

  1. I was waiting for Microsoft, they’re one of the few bug techs without a hiring freeze. I know a good few who’ve gone there in the last few months. Risky time to be moving jobs in tech.

Even though I’m not 100% happy I’m staying put because at least I’m entitled to a redundancy.

  2. Got an email from a Microsoft recruiter about a week ago (completely out of the blue, I hadn’t contacted them at all) for a recruitment drive event. I know other companies that have announced hiring freezes that are starting to hire on the down-low at the moment too, primarily new graduates. The impression I’m getting is that these companies are mainly trying to get rid of overpaid engineers that have been with the company for a good while, as opposed to *just* downsizing the workforce. I also think (don’t quote me on this) that Ireland will be less impacted than other countries, as Irish software engineers generally don’t make as much as their equivalents in other countries. So that 175 figure would be the worst-case scenario for Ireland. We’ll see how it plays out.
