Brexit: UK signs free trade deal with Australia

  1. At long last… This was a coaster of “it’s done, but not really, it’s done but not really etc”

  2. The UK left a huge free trading block in Europe to sign free trade agreements with countries much farther away? This makes no sense except in some kind of postimperial delusion of the UK as a big player in the Commonwealth countries. If you’re a freetrader, Brexit simply makes no sense. If you’re not a freetrader, then the UK government is doing more of the same and is not solving any of the important social and economic issues facing the country.

  3. Main points to consider:

    – It gives UK firms guaranteed access to bid for an additional £10bn worth of Australian public sector contracts per year

    – It allows young people to work and travel in Australia for up to three years at a time, removing previous visa rules

    – It gives UK professionals including architects, scientists, researchers, lawyers and accountants access to Australian work visas without being subject to Australia’s skilled occupation list.

  4. For the past 2 or so years the UK signed trade deals with a multitude of nations and every time this was claimed by some to be a development which would set the UK back on track in terms of more economical prosperity and Influence. But just last week or so we got the numbers that in 2021 where the main EU countries have more or less come back in terms of trade flows in regards to pre-pandemic levels, the UK has continued to fall in its trade.

That shows that just signing deals for bragging rights is not the answer. The actual impact on the economy is what matters – and there the current UK policy making falls drastically short. The time will tell if the Australia deal just adds on to that or if it has a positive outcome for the economy within the next few years already.
