Joe Ó Brien was on Newstalk talking on the issue Is Ireland Full? While I don’t agree with people protesting outside buildings housing refugees I do think this is a symptom of the government not listening to the public. They seem to bury their heads in the sand and say its all grand. The reality is Ireland is a mess and I think when people have concerns over immigration they are always met with the weak way to end a conversation – Your racist. Joe Ó Brien is clueless either unknowingly or purposly. I have see such a shift in the past few months how Irish people are reacting in their opinions with immigration. Most politicians live in a bubble. The sad thing is it is only gonna cause a uptake in the far right.

  1. Listen, I think us Irish people just need to accept the dip in the quality of life that is happening. In fact, our quality of life will continue to get a little worse but that’s not necessarily a totally bad thing. By taking in many vulnerable people from around the world, our sacrifice will mean something and if we have to resort to living in smaller, less appealing forms of accommodation for the indefinite future then that is the price we have to pay to make the world a better place for everyone.

  2. How many people are there in Ireland, and how many/what percentage of them are bogus asylum seekers? I think you’ll find they make up a tiny percentage of the population.

Blaming a tiny, usually powerless, group of people is textbook scapegoating, and invariably leads to bad shit happening.

Maybe if the protesters turned up at long derelict buildings, Leinster house, AirBnB or vulture fund offices, which are the actual and/symbolic causes of the crisis they’d get more sympathy.

  3. The missing point that’s not talked about is the “Lack of Housing” which feeds a lot of this talk. If you are paying high rent, or cant find accommodation its very easy to recruit to the far right
