SBB App is so good it works abroad! (Here in London)

  1. I’ve been using SBB for entire Europe. It’s more up to date than Interrail Rail Planner app, and way better UX. Also shows all commuter train departures in most cities.

Obvious ticketing doesn’t work but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  2. And yet it still cant tell you what part of your journey is already covered by the tickets you have and lets you pay double and tripple for everything.

  3. Beware though that the SBB app does not account for temporary timetable modifications in the UK. For instance, it did not account for the “leaves on the rails” timetable (yes, that’s a thing) when I traveled around the UK in the autumn. Just make sure to cross check with https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk to get the actual up-to-date information.

  4. I use the app to get the next departures of my local german S-Bahn stop onto my apple Watch, as the DB or my local Verkehrsverbund don’t have anything to do so.

  5. Best train app ever. I tried finding train connections from central Norway to Sweden – not a chance. Due to privatizations none of the companies talk to each other and you simply do not find a connection.

But then I checked SBB et voilà, all connections listed in full between companies. Amazing.

  6. This is what happens when you enforce a continental standard for train data. Everyone everywhere can read it instantly without any issue.

  7. I often travel for customer visits in all of Europe and always use SBB. Most of my colleagues are based in Malaysia and they’ve all started using the SBB app because of me and now I’ve got the local admins thinking that SBB is the pan-European rail app 😂

  8. And you all know about that game they built in the SBB app as an “Easter egg”? I learned about it on Reddit last year and just checked it’s still there. A bit of fun while you wait for your train.

  9. Before the war in Ukraine started you could plan a trip all the way to Vladivostok. Once I even managed to find the timetable for the New York-Montreal line

  10. Imo the best app outside of Switzerland is “trainline”. Quite accurate, easy to use and you can buy tickets and scan them at the turnstiles in the UK as well
