Berlin is preparing for Leopard delivery – but has not yet decided

  1. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) does not yet see a clear majority in the Ukrainian supporters’ camp for a delivery of Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine. “There is no uniform opinion,” said Pistorius on the sidelines of the meeting of the Ukraine contact group at the American air force base Ramstein in the Palatinate on Friday afternoon.

In recent days, a number of experts and politicians, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, had given the impression that Germany in particular stands in the way. He had criticized Germany on Thursday evening in the ARD for being too hesitant and demanded a decision on the question. The federal government must agree in principle to exports of leopard tanks, including to third countries such as Ukraine.

Pistorius now said, “the impression that has occasionally arisen that there is a closed coalition and Germany stands in the way, this impression is wrong.” There are many allies who said there are good reasons for and against the delivery. They must be carefully weighed up. From German delegation circles, it was said to the F.A.Z. that not a single delivery request had still been received from states in Berlin in order to get the green light for a delivery of Leopard 2 combat tanks to Ukraine. This also applies to Poland, whose government even thought out loud about making corresponding exports without German approval.

No one can say today how the decision will end, Pistorius continues. But it is important to him to be “beware of it,” if the decision for a delivery is made, so that training and provision can take place quickly if necessary. The Minister of Defense said he had given his ministry an investigation mandate to determine the exact stocks of Leopard tanks in the armed forces as well as in industry, including their types, compatibility and availability. According to Pistorius, this is “not a prejudice, but simply the preparation for “the case of cases.”

Pistorius once again pointed out the weapons aid that Ukraine receives in the “spring package. Among other things, it is about marten gunner tanks, a Patriot system, another iris T-air defense system with ammunition. In total, the package has a value of more than one billion euros, according to Pistorius. Deuitschland’s contribution thus rises to 3.3 billion euros.

  2. I feel like I’ve been reading the same headline for the last three months. They could learn from nike and ‘just do it’

  3. Not much time left in a day to actually make decisions when you’re busy spamming 24/7 on reddit how it’s not you delaying.

  4. I seriously wonder if we are doing this crap PR with this zigzagging on purpose or if our government is just being stupid.

  5. Our new defense minister is one day in office and decided to evaluate the German Leopard stocks. The last defense minister did not do this for almost a year of war in Europe. I think that is basically everything you need to know about her accomplishments.

  6. What are they waiting for? Russia is preparing hundreds of thousands of conscripts to send to war. They will be poorly trained, poorly equipped, and ready for heinous war crimes.

Ukraine needs both tanks, and vehicles so that their troops won’t have to be on foot as they move forward the Russian occupied areas.
