I ate this on a recent trip to Helsinki and haven’t stopped thinking about it since, can anyone tell me what it’s called?

  1. If you call this tastes carb load a heavenly food, I don’t know what to say.

I love Finland and all that but Finnish food is just sustenance.

  2. Delicious! 3/4 of my grandparents are from Karjala, so I’ve grown up with these, make a batch every once in a while. I had one of the patrons at the local FInnish Society refer to them as ‘boring eastern peasant food’, and turned his nose up at them. Probably spoke Swedish as a first language, I’m guessing.

  3. From the pic it looks like a potato mash Karelian pastry, which imo are better even than the rice ones. Magic crispy rye dough and always best with real butter or make it with egg butter and just the best. We eat these with egg butter on Independence Day (Dec. 6) because yep, amazing.
