Karelian pasty or karjalan piirakka. The most heavenly finnish food.
Looks more like perunapiirakka to me which is almost the same as karelian pie.
Karelian pie has rice porridge in it. This is perunapiirakka, so its the same but with mashed potato as a filling.
They’re even better when warm with eggbutter (munavoi) on top
Karjalan Piirakka. Often topped with egg and butter.
If you call this tastes carb load a heavenly food, I don’t know what to say.
I love Finland and all that but Finnish food is just sustenance.
En mutta! (Swedish)
That is a poor imitation of karelian pie. Try to get your hands on a proper one e.g. from https://kotileipomosorsa.fi/ (sold also around capital region)
Delicious! 3/4 of my grandparents are from Karjala, so I’ve grown up with these, make a batch every once in a while. I had one of the patrons at the local FInnish Society refer to them as ‘boring eastern peasant food’, and turned his nose up at them. Probably spoke Swedish as a first language, I’m guessing.
God I miss it SO MUCH
From the pic it looks like a potato mash Karelian pastry, which imo are better even than the rice ones. Magic crispy rye dough and always best with real butter or make it with egg butter and just the best. We eat these with egg butter on Independence Day (Dec. 6) because yep, amazing.
