Terve,

we’re planning on going to Finland this summer with two kids – a baby and an infant then. Unfortunately, this means we need to bring a lot of luggage – and we don’t have the biggest car (as we don’t need it for 95% of our day-to-day journeys).

So whenever we went on vacation, we strapped a waterproof bag on the bicycle carrier of our car like this: [https://imgur.com/a/MUI8jh4](https://imgur.com/a/MUI8jh4)

**I was wondering if there are any traffic rules in Finland prohibiting this?** I tried to google this, but couldn’t find any good answer online.

(Safely securing the luggage, not covering the license plate and not exceeding the weight limit of the carrier and clutch is a given.)

Many thanks for your help and guidance!

  1. It’s not legal. Only a bike can be attached to a bike rack. All other peripherals like drinking bottle or other attachments in the bike must be removed and they also cannot block view of registry number or brake lights so I would say a bag even if it’s attached properly is not legal. Legal of course always doesn’t mean that police will stop if you if it looks neat and well tied up.

Edit: ehh now that I think about it you are allowed to load your car with stuff so that it’s coming out of your trunk up to two meters, maybe this would apply instead: https://finlex.fi/fi/laki/alkup/2015/20151612 1612/2015 §45 2.

  2. I’m pretty sure that no one cares, not even the police, which is a rare case to even see today outside capital area. Go for it, just make sure it’s attached securely.
