An absolutely horrific time. A good English language book on the subject is “Leningrad” by Anna Reid.
And just couple generations later the descendants of the survivors are killing families and children in Ukraine.
Putin’s older brother died in the siege of Leningrad.
Not much empathy was learned though as today Putin destroys civilian apartment blocks with missiles.
Heartbreaking.
there’s an *opinion* that it wasn’t really a blockade (gulf of Finland and Ladoga lake shores were free) and that Soviets could’ve provided enough food to prevent famine but never did that because they thought that nazis will capture the city, so people be damned.
and while we’re here, I feel like it’s good historical time to strip Zhukov and other Soviet marshals off of their undeserved honours (order of the bath, legion d’honneur, presidential medal of freedom, hello?)
