Woman handed suspended sentence for paddle assault on boy in Bristol

  1. That scar will hopefully be a reminder to him not to throw stones and get into a physical altercation with others.

    Little shit.

  2. Wait what happened?? She was paddle boarding with her children and a gang of 30 kids threw rocks at them hitting her daughter?

  3. Some children threw mud balls which may have contained stones, one of which reportedly hit a paddleboard (althoughg it is not clear that it hit the paddleboard of this woman’s family). This person then accused a 12 year old boy, pushed him and hit him with a paddle.

If she had hit someone who was throwing the stones it would still be battery of a minor (it is clearly not self defence, after the act) but I would understand her actions.

That is not what happened, however, she struck and permanently injured an innocent child with a weapon, and I think she was lucky to escape with as short a suspended sentence as she did.

  4. So a group of 30 yobs throw stones at mother and daughter, one yob gets hurt, and she gets sentenced and death threats? Sounds about right.

  5. Total respect to this woman. Not many people who’d protect their own like this. Sometimes groups of rowdy lads need taught a lesson. Hopefully they’ll think twice before throwing shit at people again.

  6. So he was part of the group that threw rocks at her and her kids? This sentence is outrageous. If someone threw rocks at my daughter whilst canoeing it would be hard not to want to do the same s as this woman to be honest

  7. All this looks to me is that the family of the boy fail to accept that their boy was behaving like a little shit, and they are over exaggerating his distress. Woman was with her children and they were being pelted with objects by a gang of 30 youths. Any decent mother would have done the exact same thing. Maybe he was wrongly picked by her. Maybe I would personally bet money that he did actually throw things at her and he subsequently lied to his parents and police.

  8. What terrible reporting by the guardian again.

Leads with a racial angle despite the judge ruling specifically that it was not. And after the case has been brought after a lobbying campaign.

  9. The opening line “A white woman who struck a 12-year-old black boy” yet the article goes on to explain how it isn’t racially motivated – it isn’t.

I have had young lads throw rocks towards me. One would’ve put me in hospital, or worse, but I didn’t hit back for this very reason.

  10. Sounds to me like it’s a case of fuck around an find out.

Bonking the child on the noggin is wrong however I suspect it wasn’t entirely unprovoked, large groups of boys have a habit of acting like ass holes and egging eachother on.

I wonder if the woman has any prior convictions to this sort of behaviour.

  11. The guardian still playing the race card, even when the courts ruled it wasn’t a racially motivated attack. Classic, boy who cried Wolf vibes here.

  12. This is a split comment section if I’ve ever seen one

What would you do if you were floating about with your kids and a large group of boys started pelting you with mud and rocks? I’m not a father, so I don’t really know.

If I was out with friends I’d probably confront, but we’re a bunch of big scary lads. I absolutely wouldn’t assault one with a weapon, but my size and strength advantage would be much more than what this lady had so there wouldn’t be any excuse. I’d also be conscious of getting stabbed. But what are we supposed to do? Just let these things go uninhibited? It’s not like the police are going to turn up in a timely fashion if at all.

  13. I feel like people should wear bodycams.

A woman and two children paddleboarding. A day out with her family, presumably minding their own business. A group of 30 youngsters throwing rocks and mud at them.

She has the confidence to confront them. Gets into a shouting match with one particular child. There’s pushing. Then she twats him.

That’s what we know. It would be nice to know if Antwon was throwing rocks and mud? Why he entered into a shouting match with her? And, who pushed first?

In balance, I think it’s likely that 30 kids were being utter twats and doing something dangerous. She had the balls to do something about it. Maybe if all people got scars when they did something wrong they’d only have one scar.

  14. The article links to an earlier report with more details:

    * the boy has autism

    * the cut was deep enough to need gluing back together

    * the letter to the boy’s family about the initial decision not to prosecute said: “The main reason is that during interview the suspect raised a possibility for self-defence. By this we mean that the suspect admitted pushing Antwon and when pushing him she had the paddle in her hand and this contacted with his head. The suspect claimed she pushed Antwon away because he challenged her and she felt threatened by him and the surrounding group.”

Maybe it’s just badly phrased, but it reads like the pushing and shoving was coming from her.

  15. People get angry. Good thing he wasn’t hurt even more, I imagine it’s easy to generate a lot of force with a paddle.

I actually found another article with a video that says the boy has autism. [https://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2022-05-09/dads-anger-as-boy-suffers-head-injury-after-being-hit-with-paddle](https://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2022-05-09/dads-anger-as-boy-suffers-head-injury-after-being-hit-with-paddle) The case only went to trial after an appeal from the family, as initially the police said it likely didn’t have enough evidence for a conviction. Looks like his scar is really minor, nothing that will get him bullied or make him look rough or whatever, especially after a couple more years.

  16. It’s pretty disgusting how the article is pushing a racial angle so it’s impossible to make heads or tails of what actually went on.
