Red squirrels number on the rise in Scotland, survey finds

  1. I can definitely see this irl. In my treks around north-central Scotland I’m now seeing them once every five or so walks, where before they used to practically be the stuff of legend. There’s one particular place that’s so good for them now that I can lure them out with some nuts, and be practically guaranteed a sighting within just a few minutes. It’s amazing.

  2. They are adorable but the article makes it out that they’ve bounced back on there own when the main reason is culling grey squirrels

  3. They are increasing along the western side of the UK as well I believe.

Always amuses me when people go mental when we have to kill Grey’s.

  4. They have introduced pine martins all the way up the A9 in Scotland to stop grey squirrels from progressing further north. Apparently something to do with their preference of motorway corridors for travel, rather than hitching the national express bus…

  5. I’ve only seen red squirrels once in my lifetime when I was staying in the lake district. The cottage was on the side of a slope and going up the stairs there was a window at the top of the stairs. A couple of red squirrels just hanging out looking at me looking at them. Far smaller than the greys

  6. There is a strip of wooden land next to my house. It has a grey infestation. How do I get reds to populate it? I could shoot the greys with an air rifle, but its not like reds are going to get on the train and come and move in on their own.

  7. Nice to see some good news on British wildlife. As cute as grey squirrels are, they are an invasive species and it is important more is done to re-establish red squirrels in their former habitats for the sake of biodiversity and maintaining the British countryside as it should be. Our countryside is pretty barren and more needs to be done to rewild it to the way it was over a millennium ago.
