The timing of this photo means it was taken right in the middle of the Red Terror when Lenin and the Cheka (earliest Soviet secret police) were murdering & exterminating anywhere between 500 to 1000 people a week for being deemed as their opposition.

The socialism Connolly is talking about here is the type of socialism that was implemented in the USSR.
This is what brought the USSR from being one of the poorest countries in Europe that regularly endured severe famines, only half a century later, to being one of the richest countries in the world, with virtually no homelessness.
Many don’t know that Ireland had a few ‘Soviets’ around this time and could have gone a different path.

In his time more than a million political opponents were thought to have been killed. thousands upon thousands of ww1 Prisoners of war executed. Cossacks purged. Famines fostered where millions died.
