Hi

I’m Danish with family ties to Germany. My great grandfather was born and raised in Flensburg but moved to Denmark when he met my Danish great grandmother. His father, my great great grandfather (in the family know as Opa Schulz) was from Berlin but later moved to Flensburg. Here he owned a barbershop until Wehrmacht forced him out in the beginning of 1940s as he persistently refused to join their cause.

I’ve uploaded five images you can see here: [https://imgur.com/a/VKeBoIi](https://imgur.com/a/VKeBoIi)

1. An original photo of my great great grandfather (Opa Schulz) and my great great grandmother in front of his barbershop.
2. Schwarzer Walfisch, more information below.
3. A drawing he received on his 75th birthday honoring him and his barbershop – notice the train in the background.
4. A photo from 1995 taken by my mother when a German family member (Horst) toured her around Flensburg pointing out the location of the barbershop.
5. A photo from yesterday, taken by me – more information below.

Prior to me visiting Flensburg, I’ve been conversing with my mom trying to locate the barbershop. She was then in contact with Horst, who is now in his mid 70s, and he said that the barbershop was on Angelburger Straße. He later added, that the original building was no longer there, and that a C&A had been built instead – but that The Black Whale (which is understand to be an old inn or restaurant), and the train bridge was still there.

Here is his original message: “Hallo \[OP’s mom\] ich Freue mich das \[OP\] für Opa Schulz Intresse zeigt

.Leider steht das Haus nicht mehr. Es Stand wo heute C & A Steht. Aber der Schwarze Walfisch das Lokal und die Eisenbahn Brücke steht noch .Die Straße heist Angelburgerstraße. Vieleicht finde ich noch alte Bilder. Liebe Grüße von Horst”.

We then asked him about the reference to Schwarze Walfisch, but even after a series of mails we have yet to get an answer from Horst.

Some digging led my to this Wikipedia page, which tells that Schwarze Walfisch indeed has an interesting history to it: [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwarzer\_Walfisch](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwarzer_Walfisch)

Horst mentioning C&A and Schwarzer Walfisch was the reason why I took an image showing both buildings – as well as the bridge.

But – now, when returned home, I was looking at my moms 1995 photo, and notice that what she took a photo off is the building to the right of Schwarzer Walfisch – and NOT where C&A is located. This makes me wonder, if Horst is not too old to remember the correct location, and if the shop was in fact located to the right of Schwarzer Walfisch. After all, it was the location Horst pointed out 27 years ago.

Now, going back to the first photo. To me it looks like the numbering above the door says 44, or maybe 34 – hard to tell.

[Angelburger Straße 44](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Angelburger+Str.+44,+24937+Flensburg,+Tyskland/@54.782648,9.4399275,80m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x47b34297472979a9:0xa664c8c3bdd0891a!8m2!3d54.7826379!4d9.4401329), seems to be wedged between Schwarzer Walfisch and the building on the right of it. But, looking on Wikipedia it states: Das Gasthaus Schwarzer Walfisch in Flensburg in der Angelburger Straße Nr. 44 gilt als älteste Gastwirtschaft der Stadt und gehört zu ihren Kulturdenkmalen.

[Angelburger Straße 34](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Angelburger+Str.+34,+24937+Flensburg,+Tyskland/@54.7825814,9.4390988,160m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x47b342976af1d4c5:0xbc90190b3bfc1093!8m2!3d54.7827304!4d9.439473), looks to in the middle of an intersection, perhaps because the number isn’t used. C&A is in 28-30.

This post ended longer than expected, but since I cannot get a hold of Horst again, I had to do some digging myself. This is the furthest I’ve got, and I greatly appreciate any help I can get. The original photo shows a house number – I see 44, what do you see?

  1. The first thing that comes to my mind is that the road looks to be tilted to the other side, as if it’s a house with odd numbers on the other side of the road. Using Apple’s look around-feature I was sadly unable to find a house looking like that. House number 2 looked kinda like it, but that would put me on the side of the road that you were talking about already.

    Maybe post this on r/Geoguessr?
