1. It’ll be run by some shithouse private company like Veolia or Biffa or Capita
2. It’ll be run for profit
3. It’ll make things cost a lot more…
4. … which is good for the profits of said shithouse private company…
5. … but bad for the customer
6. Inevitably there will be backhanders passed to some horrible Tory MP or Lord
Let me guess, 30p added to purchase price, 5p refunded to customer when bottle returned. The remaining 25p will be creamed off as profit by the private company running the scheme.
….as I’ve said all along. Our Grandparents know how to do it. Fixing stuff, not throwing it, paper bags, glass bottles…reusing stuff.
For those of us who have been recycling plastic bottles and cans in our recycling bin for decades now, this is a ballache. We already pay council tax to have these things collected and recycled, now no doubt this will not be cost-neutral for consumers so some chummy council company can coin some off the top. Plus the hassle of having to drag this to the supermarket or whatever. What a load of crap.
Germany has done this for years. The first time I saw it I was mesmerised; it’s such a simple yet effective method. It’s brilliant.
I can’t wait to see how badly we fuck it up.
We should have been doing this decades ago with plastic bottles, it used to be the case with glass bottles.
Croatia has a great system for both glass and plastic. Alcoholics love it.
Ive always diligently recycled all my plastic bottles in the bin at home. This is a big kick in dick for bothering myself all this time and just more extortion on normal people.
20p per bottle is fuck all compared to the inconvenience of returning them. I’m not poor. I’ll chuck the fucking things in my black bin or normal waste bins if out and about from now on. Cuntish idea.
There goes a big chunk of the only actual service my council tax gives me.
“The scheme would include special machines, known as reverse vending machines, and designated sites where people can return their bottles and receive their cash back. In most cases it would be the retailers who sell drinks covered by the scheme who would host a return point.”
I assume this is just going to fuck over the poor and smaller businesses as usual.
I don’t see your local corner shop having a returns machine.
It’ll undoubtedly just increase the cost of all bottles, both to pay for the scheme and to fill the pockets of whichever Tory donors get given the contracts.
A lot of countries have been doing this for a long time, why is the UK dragging its heels? They want people to recycle, making it worth the effort is a good way to help ensure they do so.
So, now, instead of putting my recycling in a recycling bin that gets collected from my door, I have to sort it into a third pile and transport that to someone inevitably not very rural-friendly place in order to not end up paying more for anything that comes in a bottle?
Great. Why can’t people just have some small shred of personal responsibility rather than having to put stupid hoops to jump through like this?
As a litterpicker, I look forward to seeing the results, if any.
>Recycling plastic bottles and drink cans is set to be easier for tens of millions of people thanks to a new deposit return scheme
How’s taking them to a “reverse vending machine” easier than sticking them in the recycling bin?
Can we have the same for the fucking single-use vapes?
In Germany this is done and it gives homeless people a job, and keeps the place cleaner. Not as much smashing of bottles either. Why did we ever stop?

Some good news, hopefully this goes ahead!
The pop man used to do this when I was kid in the 80’s. Forget the brand of the drink now.
Don’t you bring your own containers to buy stuff at the shops?
Congratulations, we are almost doing as well as we were in 1975. What’s next, milk in glass bottles??

Excuse my ignorance, but is there anything wrong with plastic bottles going to a well managed landfill?
No doubt it will be more expensive and shitter than other parts of the world that already do this. Such is the UK way
If they bring in [German pfand](https://allaboutberlin.com/guides/pfand-bottles) machines it will be perfect. Existing technology and process which just needs installing
Guarantee that…
1. It’ll be run by some shithouse private company like Veolia or Biffa or Capita
2. It’ll be run for profit
3. It’ll make things cost a lot more…
