> Sevington was built in little over two years mainly to conduct import inspections on goods of plant and animal original from the EU..But the regime of rules it was built to administer has never come into force because of U-turns forced on government by the dawning realisation that trade operates better without friction.
> Last spring Jacob Rees-Mogg, then minister for Brexit opportunities, delayed the start of checks for the fourth time, fearing they would be too bureaucratic and costly for businesses, and cause more tailbacks on Kent’s roads.
> There is less talk now of hard borders, more of reducing friction – the whole idea of the EU single market. [Industry experts] suggest ministers are even considering moving back to closer alignment with EU rules for certain traded products, including those of plant and animal origin.

Every business that once competed within the single market is now up against competition from the EU that isn’t checked while their exports to the EU has the extra paperwork costs. It seems the only Brexit winners aren’t british.
It goes without saying those guys voted leave, “knowing perfectly well what they were voting for”. And they voted for Boris again in 2019, when there was no doubt about what was the plan.
I actually just feel no sympathy at this point. ‘Project Fear’ was spot on. We had plenty of people telling us things are going to go downhill. People voted for BoJo, a narcisstic liar who only looks after himself. I frankly have no idea why anyone thought this was a good idea, except for those in charge who could manipulate the situation to their own advantage.
I left the UK 5 years ago because I could see the writing on the wall, and I’m never going back. We did this to ourselves.
Guardian going hard on Brexit today
Why don’t they use it as a migrant immigration centre? Gotta be cheaper than 60,000 4 star seaside hotel rooms
