Judge allows seizure of Fedasil’s belongings in order to pay imposed fines

  1. **A bailiff may seize and sell Fedasil’s belongings, the French-speaking court of first instance in Brussels has ruled. The agency for the reception of asylum seekers was ordered to pay penalty payments last year for failing to take in asylum seekers, but it did not pay those fines.**

This is what La Libre Belgique writes on Friday. In late December, a bailiff was appointed who drew up a list of goods to be confiscated. These included a television, seating furniture and six sofas, goods not considered essential to Fedasil’s mission. The items may be seized and the sale is scheduled for 13 February.

“We are examining the two decisions of the court (which concern fines of more than 13,000 euros in one case and more than 99,800 euros in the second case, ed.) and the measures we need to take,” Fedasil responded in La Libre.

State Secretary for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor (CD&V) believes that “the seizures solve nothing” and points out that “several thousand reception places will have been created by 2022”.

    **Using money better**

Fedasil has since been convicted more than 1,000 times for failing to provide legally guaranteed asylum reception. Each time, the Brussels court imposes penalty payments for every day that this is not done. In such cases, Fedasil tries to find accommodation for the asylum seekers in question as quickly as possible to avoid effectively having to pay these penalty payments. The total sum of penalties imposed may already be running into millions, VRT writes.
Speaking to VRT, De Moor says he is doing everything in her power to avoid paying penalty payments. “We are talking about large sums of money and I think we can better use that money to create shelters.” There is also no political unwillingness to create shelters, she stresses. “But the reality is that the challenge is very big and we cannot solve it without structural reforms. Seizures cannot do that either.”

  2. Tja, recordaantal asielzoeker. ‘t Is niet raar dat het systeem het niet zomaar aankan.

De overheid die de overheid miljoenenboetes uitschrijft is ook de oplossing niet. Minder asielzoekers binnenlaten zou al een veel beter oplossing zijn. Voor dit en voor andere problemen.

Well that’s something she has in common with them at least

  4. This is the most useless solution ever. The government fining their own agency will solve nothing. A few measly furniture pieces aren’t even worth a fraction of this ridiculous fine.
This is Belgian politics and bureaucracy at its finest.
