Simon Clarke: Tories must focus on younger voters to survive, ex-minister says

  1. By younger voters, they mean anyone younger than 70.

The majority of the Tory voter base is as out of touch as the Tory party.

  2. When I was at uni from 2009 to 2011 the Young Conservative society was the biggest union group on the campus. I think people forget it a bit but there was a genuine wave of youth support for the Conservatives around that time, the odd line like “Conservatism is the new punk rock”. It always seemed odd to me but that’s just the reality of what was happening at the time. People were sick of Blair, Brown, and Labour, Cameron and the Tories seemed fresh and exciting I guess.

Fast forwards to today, not one single person I know in my age group would even consider voting Tory. Even the die-hards, people I spent many many hours debating with over a few pints, are either now non-voters or will be voting Lib Dem. A few of them are *genuinely* disgusted at what the party has become.

They’ve gone the same way as the Republicans. They have appealed to a narrower and narrower group of Alright Jacks, they have couched their entire social and political narrative on increasingly deranged Fake News narratives, building a cult mentality that is just getting more and more extreme as the years go on. Shockingly eventually you do reach a point where normal people recognize how culty and extreme its getting and decide to leave the echo chamber. I think this is what has been happening to the Tories for the last ~18 months now and they don’t even seem to realize it.

  3. Tell you what…

Free childcare, wipe out student loans and force banks to accept mortgages up to the amount of rent paid over the last 3 years and I’ll vote them in forever.

  4. All political parties must. Instead of just viewing young people as a resource to be worked to the bone.

We, and other EU nations, face a demographic crisis because we have prioritised profit over human values e.g. starting families. It’s a pyramid scheme that is going to crumble.

Who gives a fuck about whether a party survives. Absolutely inconsequential in comparison to what I said above.

  5. Oh god please no. I remember the Young Conservative movement of the 80s. Not sure I can handle a collection of chinless, self important square bears like that again.

  6. On a surface level I think the idea that “people become more Conservative as they get older” was largely predicated on the idea that the Tories provide stable management of the country at roughly the same level as it currently was. People in the 45+ range typically had a house, a pension, a career and a family so they didn’t want the boat to be rocked too much which made it an obvious choice to vote Conservative. Now with the lingering impacts of austerity and the radicalism of Brexit still driving them the Tories simply aren’t that political party anymore. The party that rejects expert opinion and says “fuck business” isn’t one that is going to appeal to people that want stability.

  7. Well the Tories have put taxes up for the young to pay for their dwindling elderly voter base. They’ve made their bed and they will lie in it.

The death knell tolls for taxin’ Tories 🪦

  8. The conservatives stand for nothing – why on earth would anyone vote for them.

High taxes and low public services – they’re literally a nothing part which doesn’t offer anything.

  9. “I don’t think we should be surprised when people don’t turn to the party of capital because capitalism isn’t working for them.” Ok, mate. Do you want to carry on thinking about what that means ? No ? Oh well.

  10. Maybe and I know this is a wild idea, instead of screwing everyone except your friends with corrupt contracts, how about put policy into place which helps young people and people who are working? No too wild?

  11. only way am vote tory is if they go like Left leaning centrists. and also remove the FPTP voting system, and bring NHS back under control so people not funnelling money out of it higher up for own back bucket by making fake company’s. bring the hole rale system and power / gas lines back under the uk government. and strip out corruption in the top government and even local consuls.

sick tired being shafted ever sins I left school back in 2009.
sick tired being robbed by the government. while they sit on there hidden wealth that’s avoiding all tax.

  12. A problem they have too is not many young people will believe them on housebuilding, we’re building fewer every year and the last two schemes they cooked up failed miserably. I’m also pretty sure they voted against housebuilding targets, but I could be wrong.

  13. The Tories are the government equivalent of M&S. Their core are rich, ageing and dying off but struggle with how to rebrand and bring younger people in.

  14. To be fair they are focusing on younger voters, it just that their focus is to fuck them over so hard that the even the idea of voting Tory is vomit inducing

  15. When they have already successfully permanently alienated a large swathe of younger voters, meaning people aged 40 and below, they stand no chance of surviving in the long run. They will have to target those who are in their late teens or very early 20s to have a chance of gaining some younger voters to replace the elderly voting base that is slowly dying off. People my age (30) have spent too long under the Tories to be fooled into voting for them (for the most part at least), they will need to target those too young to remember all the shit they have put young people through over the last decade to reverse that.

  16. Tories have fucked over millennials and Gen Z from the moment they stepped into office. Why the fuck would we vote for the people who have ruined our lives?

  17. Why don’t they focus on running the country properly and fairly for everybody? 😂

Gosh they’re so hopelessly inept. I’ll go prep the champagne for the next GE when they are wiped out of existence for good.

  18. Looks like a nonce.

Thinks people on £30k pa have no need to use food banks.

And if he thinks young people are going to vote Tory, when for the last 13 years they’ve done everything possible vilify, denigrate and remove opportunities for young people, he is also, seriously and legitimately mentally unwell.

Of all the people I know – I know only one person who supports the Tories. Everyone else has a visceral hatred of them and what they have done, continue to do and what they plan to do to this country.

The only thing this gormless looking four eyed twat has got right is that the Tories are dying. And that can’t happen soon enough.

    Simon Clarke; the cunts cunt.
