Source: [Reporters Without Borders](https://rsf.org/en/index?s=08), there’s a full interactive map with data, scores in defferent areas (politics. economy, etc) that contribute to global score and so on.
The issue in much of the West is that newspapers are no longer profitable and rely on ultra-high net worth funders as a sort of ‘philanthropic’ project to stay alive. However, that type of funding comes with strings attached. This is one of the reasons why mainstream print media in much of the West has semi-restricted freedom of speech.
Edit: Controversial, but one could argue this billionaire capture of print media in the 2010s caused Brexit in the UK.
No surprises there… except Iceland, is that orange (the lighter shade)?
It was a time when I really believed in these “assessments”. But for most, it’s just propaganda disguised as an objective assessment procedure.
Estonia is above Finland, because Finnish journalists are forced to take jabs/hate on Tänak, while Estonians just praise Rovanperä.
JPEG compression got rid of Zealand (Danish island)… love to see it
Poland should be darker 😛
But I guess we can call attempts to close the biggest tv station opposing the government AND buying off all of the local newspapers by a government-allied petrol businessman AND vile and open hate-propaganda in national tv a “problematic situation” ;p
Portugal, the most nordic south country in Europe!
I miss the good old times when we were orange and not red…
What happened in the Netherlands that we’re now 28th? We were like 4th or 5th or something just two years earlier.
Edit: and apparently 6th in 2021.
In a way, I think it’s rubbish. Look at my country. 2021 40th place, 2022 20th place. Literally nothing has changed when it comes to media. Just a new government in charge.
It will be interesting to see how the presidential election shakes up the situation. If our position changes in any direction, then this index does not reflect reality.
I am critical, but as I say, almost nothing has changed when it comes to the media. The opposition ANO and its oligarch still control several important newspapers.
WTF is a “problematic situation” in Poland? Any press can print anything.
You know this is utter bullshit when you see Sweden in green which has one of the most restrictive laws for the press, example you are mandated by law to censor all information regarding who commits crimes, and not just the name mind you, but ethnicity and such. Which is exactly the kind of laws they had in the USSR, just aimed at different enemies tho.
