Paschal Donohoe held 13 meetings with Michael Stone, and used loophole to keep full donation under radar

  1. It annoys me that so much Dail time is being wasted on this. Let him make statements outside the Dail etc and the opposition the same but do it outside the chamber.

I understand the amount is above the threshold but I would guess 95% of the public don’t think this story stinks of corruption. A loophole is not illegal at the end of the day.

Hugh O’Connell is jealous of journalists getting actual scoops (golfgate etc) and is persisting with this.

  2. >Meanwhile, despite Mr Donohoe saying Mr Stone bought 22 tickets for the Fine Gael fundraising raffle in 2021, worth €1,382, it can be revealed the actual price paid by the businessman for the €80 tickets was €1,760.

There’s more substance to the controversy than this, surely

  3. This is total non story. The amounts involved here are miniscule. It is embarrassing for the country we are trying to make this out to be corruption. We are a joke.

  4. I just hope people who believe Paschal should be held account here will follow their own mortality and expect the same from their own parties. Me thinks it’s the one rule for one party and another rule for theirs. Corruption is corruption no matter if in government or opposition.

  5. I’m a civil servant, we can accept nothing from the public. Everything has to be declared. And I’m only one step above cleaner FFS.

  6. Everyone makes mistakes. So long as they aren’t repeatedly made, it’s nothing major.

We should look at what he has done, and what he is doing. Out of all the politicians, he’s one of the better ones.

  7. It’s a good thing The Ditch and Village Magazine have embarrassed our media outlets into doing their fucking job.

  8. I’m fed up of people complaining about politicians who break rules and what not, hoping they will either quit or get the sack. If he’s your local TD by not voting for him in the next election, is the only way these people will ever learn.

    Edit. Spelling.

  9. The whole thing is surprising, not because Paschal’s squeaky clean image, but because he’s known to be a fairly cunning operator (you probably don’t rise as fast as he did without some knowledge of the political dark arts). How did he get so sloppy?

  10. At what point does the whole
“Fool us once, Shame on you, fool us twice..” Logic start to play in this country? Voting another party in thats just going to perpetuate corruption with surmount to exactly fuck all change.

  11. The comment section here is shocking. Part of the reason this country is in the state it is in is because we keep giving our politicians a pass for shit like this.

People who break the rules and don’t get caught when the money involved is small are more likely to do it again later with larger sums.

  12. He’ll be gone, surely? The fact that he’s been completely unable to answer questions beyond his statement on Wednesday, refusing to say any more until Tuesday evening stinks to high heaven.

  13. When I think of the political parties who have held office in Ireland.

I am reminded of that John le Carré quote from the Call for the Dead “a man who could reduce any colour to grey.”

  14. Am I the only one who thinks this story is complete fucking nonsense.

13 meetings with a party donor over a 5 year period – how is that unexpected? TD’s don’t exactly have a huge pool of donors, so it’s hardly surprising that they might meet with them twice a year.

Regarding the donation exceeding the 1500 limit, I think I would interpret the rule the same way as pascal did.

If I was going to an event (lets say a dinner) where part of the proceeds go to cancer research or whatever with the rest covering the event costs. I wouldn’t consider the cost of my meal to be part of my donation. I think it is reasonable consider the event profit margin to be the donation. I don’t even get why this is being called a loophole?

Naturally if the rule specified that the limit refereed to a gross sum transferred from donor to politician rather than a net donation then fair enough, but that doesn’t sound like it was specified.

  15. Term limits are needed in irish politics quick. These lads all have way too long to rig the game for their own gains.
I hope all you pre-crash home owners enjoy supporting a government who is messing up the country for younger generations
