The amount of layoffs from large businesses the last few days has been nuts
And to think they rent and own many of the buildings in grand canal dock area of Dublin…letting go of Irish staff creates wasted money on development and construction of real estate….
Staff who join these tech companies are so brainwashed into thinking they’ve made it. Post their SWAG on LinkedIn and act like they are in some sorta dream job.
But in reality they’re just a number and typically first to go
Shit for those staring down the barrel of losing their jobs . Really hope ireland isn’t too badly effected but 5k in Ireland would make you think they’re definitely going to cut back. Hopefully it’s just downscaling to pre-covid levels of staffing
Amazon with 18,000 globally
Salesforce 10% staff
Goggle parent alphabet now 6%
Worrying amount job cuts happening globally.
What the government and IDA do to attract and appease these big businesses (and correctly so) compared to what the do for our small indigenous firms is crazy.
You won’t hear about / find that small firms who barely break even doing layoffs just to increase owners profits.
Funny, if you were to mention any of these tech lay offs back during r/Ireland’s little spell of Musk hate you’d be shrieked at.
Hope they got as generous a severance as Twitter gave!
I thought r/Ireland would be cheering. Significant tech layoffs in Dublin city centre will ease rental pressures. Most of the staff are from overseas and will move if they have no work.
I just googled lay-off Ireland and it’s smells of 2008.
It is unlikely to impact many people working in Ireland specifically and won’t be announced for months. My educated guess is < 500
5k employees and 4k contract workers. So it’s going to be a larger than an official number
On another note: even with these layoffs (mainly in recruitment staff and HR since, ya know, they’re not hiring anymore) employment is up by a considerable amount compared with pre-covid 2019.
A good reminder for everyone that all you are to these companies is a number on a spreadsheet. Theres no point killing yourself with stress over work. Do the bare assed minimum and clock out at 5 every day, earlier if possible.
