1/3 of domestic violence cases are male yet all of the examples and the language is making out only women are the victims and men are only perpetrators. It’s not a gendered crime as much as they make out, so why not help *all victims*.
Yeah its cases like this that are my biggest problem with Restorative Justice to be honest.
Its a nice idea, and their is certainly a lot of merit in it for some crimes. But the sad reality is it only works if you can get both parties to see the other as complex human beings who are willing to reflect. It kind of breaks down in cases like domestic abuse, where the abuser is all about using and controlling their victim.
Its already difficult enough as it is to break a lot of abusers holds over their victim. Trying to get them to talk, is just going descend into them persuading them they’ve changed and to give them another chance.
This is extremely dangerous. It certainly shouldn’t happen if abuser has Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder and anything in-between.
In fact these organisations should push for measures to ensure the victim is never contacted by the abuser in any way shape or form and that they would face harsh penalties, including long prison sentence if they even found to have *attempted* contact.
wouldnt doing that just traumatise victims even more?
