Women being forced in wearing Hijabs in Brussels are not an exemption and very sad. Then seeing two brave Iranian men fighting for freedom, for women, for life.. This is the kind of mindset that we need more among immigrants. Please give them a chance and protect them from possible torture and death.
Refugee status implies a personal fear/significative risk of death, harm, or inhuman treatment.
It is not a free residential permit for whoever lives in a shit country (Iran is not shit, the situation is)
The CGVS probably made an extensive investigation of their story (and personal case), which did not have any credibility. Which was probably validated by the RVV, as it is the usual process.
Sorry to break it to you, but just because people say they are political opponent doesn’t mean they actually are. And just because they is unrest in Iran doesn’t mean every single soul there will be executed or tortured. Or is even at risk.
But hey, this is newspapers. Reporting accurately informations is not what they are known for.
EDIT : CGVS is an independent administration. It doesn’t take orders from the government on specific cases. The same is even more true for the RVV, where decisions are made by judges.

Situation in Iran is beyond “worrying” as Nicole de Moor claims. [They recently executed a Karate champion, who was also a childrens coach after only giving him 15 minutes to defend himself in court](https://www.thenationalnews.com/mena/iran/2023/01/18/karate-champion-executed-in-iran-was-given-only-15-minutes-to-plead-case/), they did not even let him choose his own lawyer, the state appointed him one, so nice! That seems like it’s a safe place to send people back to. There’s an estimated 20.000 other imprisoned due to connections to the protests.
People are being imprisoned for social media posts they did before the protests even started.
Yeah Nicole, that’s maybe a level beyond worrying. Sure they _might_ not have individual persecution (yet), but it _is_ systemic, mostly targetting young educated people.
Besides, when it’s individual persecution it’s a tiny bit too late for asylum. It’s just a tiny bit harder to claim asylum when they are stuck in an Iranian prison.
Worrying is human rights in Russia, what’s happening in Iran is purging of educated people who question religious authority.
edit: With this same “individual persecution” requirement we wouldn’t even allow Uyghurs (the one China is imprisoning) in, as technically it’s not individual persecution either, but systemic. Some Uyghurs indeed don’t get persecuted, they instead have to live like lessers and hope they don’t accidentally offend the state (or their agents) in any way.
