  1. Nice to hear that he has acknowledged the problem and realised his alcoholism. Being able to stop drinking even after a wake up call isn’t easy.

    > “I’ll be completely honest about this, there is more I could have done as an MP and I wish I could get that time back. But I am resolute now that I will use my time better going forward.”

Let’s hope he stays true to his word.

  2. Crazy how some people aren’t racist no matter how much they drink. Almost like it’s just revealing who you really are.

  3. I feel like that excuse is just another thing that Coyle was doing wrong.

Addiction is a disease and we should try to be sympathetic to people who are suffering from alcoholism. But obviously he couldn’t serve his constituents if he was getting that drunk on a regular basis, and I doubt the pressure of the job was doing his mental health any favours.

I don’t think any asian constituents are going to read this and think “Oh, he was drunk *and* racist, I guess my constituency is in good hands after all.”

It feels like he’d have done himself and his constituents a favour by stepping down.

  4. > “There are people who, even at the time I got into trouble, were drinking more than me,” he said.

Did they say a bunch of really racist stuff? If they didn’t then their drinking wasn’t as much of a problems as yours. Stop blaming everyone else rather than yourself!

    > lost the Labour whip

Hmmm… Shouldn’t the party start blaming his victim and suggesting that it’s only the Wokey-Dokeys who have a problem with his drunken racism? If they’re going to admit that he’s done something wrong and remove the whip then that’s the kind of opposition thinking that means that they don’t deserve to take over in Government from the Tories!

  5. Christ, ten pints a night?

I might do ten on a big Friday but then I’ll be wiped out for the weekend. No way I could work or do speeches or hang about Westminster.

  6. It’s fine. When we do horrific shit with alcohol that’s bants, Everyone is having a laugh… don’t be so uptight… We’re British. We drink! Take ya kids to the pub, there’s a beer garden for that. Sometimes we say something a bit edgy, but no one gets offended so don’t be a pansy.

So what if we hit a nurse or two, or a fukin copper, We are having a laugh. It’s normal.

Not like the dirty criminal weed addicts, destroying society.

  7. Reminder that Neil Coyle was one of the most vehemently anti-Jeremy Corbyn MPs on account of Corbyn’s “racism”.

  8. “He hoped the action he took to stop drinking and the remorse for his behaviour would mean he could get the Labour whip restored.”

There are a handful of positions that I think it’s right to hold people up to a higher standard than the rest of the population, judges and MPs come to mind right away… but even holding him up to a common standard, he got drunk at his place of work and used a racist slur, against a journalist. 99% of employers would have called that gross misconduct and he’d have been out of the door… I really can’t see how Labour could welcome him back without taking a big hit to their credibility.
