2. First off, Northern Ireland isn’t an island, so it’s not part of “British Islands”

   Second, “British Islands” are the actual “British Isles”

   Third, what’s labelled “British Isles” are the “British and Irish Isles”

5. Wow. TIL that the Republic of Ireland is INSIDE the British Isles. Therefore Irish people CAN be described as ‘British’.

6. The defence is that its a geological term rather than political which is nonsense considering Iceland partly sits on the same North European plate yet is never referred to as British.

9. I’ve been using British Isles exclusively as a useful geographic term to describe all of the islands together literally my entire life and it has never once been an issue.

   It was only when I came here to this subreddit that I realised people actually care about it.

   In the absence of the wide acceptance of any other term it just makes complete sense to use it.

15. Honestly, who cares. If we are the British Isles, we are a unique part of it, not being either in Britain or rules by Britain.

18. When writing from Ireland (ROI for unionists, Provos et al) or about islands which are part of that sovereign territory and you have to use the broader name everyone writs the Irish and British isles from now on. Let’s all do that.

21. Interestingly the term Britain comes from the word Pritani which is a bryothonic celtic word used by the native celts of pre roman britain for the whole island group.

23. I dont really have an issue with british isles tbh but northern ireland is an island and hence not a british island. Island of Ireland which has the republic and northern ireland.
