It’s very easy for senior businesspeople to complain that they’re not given enough freedom to make money and that they’re getting taxed too much.
But their businesses rely on having a state that is running a functioning police and justice system and that has a healthy and well-educated workforce.
Economies work when businesses are confident that the courts will enforce rulings promptly, that police will protect their property, when their workers can think critically and use the latest IT systems, when staff are well-fed, healthy, and don’t leave the workforce early to look after children or the elderly relatives that social services can’t support.
