Dartmoor wild camping ban a catastrophe for children says head teacher

  1. No more camping, but at least the landlord will make a killing in real estate. It will just be at the expense of every other person. I don’t think people understand. Rich people will NEVER stop. Their greed cannot be sated. They won’t stop privatizing and destroying until there is nothing left.

  2. Not supporting the land owner, but how much of Dartmoor is affected by this recent story?

Or, by what amount has the area that can be camped on without needing permission reduced by?

Edit: Thanks, I get it now. Proper shitshow then. The Scots have the right idea.

  3. Have all of the relevant Dartmoor landowners denied permission to camp?

The ruling was that a right to camp without permission has never existed, but you’ve always been able to ask to camp. I’d think that the Duchy of Cornwall would accept the request, at least.

  4. 97% of land you cannot legally go onto. 96%of rivers you have no right to swim, in England and Wales. Been going downhill for the public, since the 1801 enclosure act.

  5. I’ve wild camped on Dartmoor many times.

This wouldn’t put me off doing it again.

I’m not sure that he could do anything more than ask me to move on.

Hope others won’t be put off a similar course of action.

Where it becomes difficult is for big organised events like the Ten Tors, where insurance/safety might be an issue.

These people really are vile. What kind of sad existence do these people lead where they go this much out of their way to try and stop other people’s harmless fun?

  6. Sometimes the law isnt right. It’s obvious that wild camping has been massively beneficial to many people, and the loss of it is part of a larger issue with access rights in this country. A number of opposition mp’s have discussed enshrining the right to wild camp on dartmoor in law, do your own research on who you believe. Otherwise, I implore you to read into the right2roam campaign, a group pushing for access rights in England more akin to that of Scotland.

  7. It won’t make the land owner change their mind. They want to keep people off their land, no matter who it is or the effects of that decision. You won’t find any reason that changes their mind, not unless it involves giving them a lot of money to access the land.

  8. “It’s easier to get forgiveness than permission” is my mantra in life.

    Dartmoor is huge.

Pitch at dusk, break camp at dawn, leave no trace.

And don’t use a fucking bright orange tent that you light up like Blackpool prom!

It’s not going to make a jot of difference to those of us who enjoy wild camping.

  9. I propose a mass camp out on this cunts land. Show the fucking prick that his money means nothing in the face of public opinion

  10. It’s a disgrace but I was not expecting anything less from these Tory supporting wealthy land barons, many haven’t done a stitch to earn their land as it was just handed down for generations since William the conqueror.

In a world where we are trying to move towards gp’s prescribing nature to treat the early stages of depression, this is a massive step back.

These toffs hide behind the bullshit of “people will damage the land” while they use it for for their posh chicken shooting, or rent it out to highest bidder to build developments or mine minerals, yet the wild campers are the problem.

Doesn’t really change much just means that like the rest of England and wales you shouldn’t technically be doing it, I will continue to wild camp and encourage anyone to go out and do it providing you are abiding by leave no trace.

  11. How is this going to be enforced?

Is the land owner going to pay for security to cover the whole area all the time?

Will they have the power to remove tents? or physically remove people?

  12. I mean correct me if I’ve got this wrong but the landlord/representative has to ask you to move on. Could I just camp and ignore them as no chance the police are gonna come all the way out to the middle of the moor just to move me along?

  13. Wait, so what happens to Ten Tors? The entire thing is based around wild camping, and it’s been run by the army of all people so it’s not like it’s a small charity event.

  14. Just wild camp still, police don’t have the funding/resources to investigate into this.

I don’t think the local Bobby will risk a ramble in the pitch black to tell a camper to not sleep.

  15. So guys there is only one thing we can do pick a date and all meet down Dartmoor for a nice big camping session. Hopefully the biggest wild camping event ever.

So let me know what date suits and we will sort it. More people the better of course.

Oh yes and our tents will be as close to the house as possible of course.
