This was completely avoidable. Dogs should never be left alone with infants.
I read that article earlier and cried for the little baby. Their poor family. Hope she didn’t suffer at all and it was quick for her. RIP small one ❤️
Very sad story, another article mentioned it was a terrier/dachshund cross that was kept outside so I have to wonder how it managed to even get to the poor little pet and was inside in the first place
That was a tight read.
People forget that dogs are animals, first and foremost.
It’s easy to forget because of the oooohh wittle pupperrrr attitude, but EVERY SINGLE DOG has the potential to harm.
Every dog. From a tiny Terrier to a Bernese.
Hell, I got attacked and had my hand torn open, resulting in 22 stitches, 2 separated tendons and several surgeries.
Everyone assumed it was a Pitbull.
It was a Golden Retriever. That big bouncy goofy gentle family dog who wouldn’t harm a fly.
Tore my hand open so badly that even after 8 months, I still have numbness in two fingers and my grip is fucked. I can’t even use a scissors without pain because the handle happens to rest right on several scars on the base of my thumb.
Please, even if it’s your sweet old Lab you’ve had for 10, years, even if it’s a cute little gentle Bichon, never ever leave dogs and children unattended in any circumstances.
Learn the body language and tells that dogs give. A wagging tail is not always happy, watch for excessive lip licking, whale eye, avoidance gaze, appeasement licking, stiffening body, flat or back ears, watch out for a lifted lip, exposed gums, a thousand yard stare, and watch their breathing.
Dogs always give warning before a bite happens, we just usually miss the signs because we don’t know them or understand them enough.
Edit: I knew the dog well, had worked with him daily and he snapped and pinned another dog, I got injured breaking it up. He latched on and pulled me to the ground, he tried to get to my face.
This was not a random dog who didn’t know me or who I didn’t know. I’m also not lacking in common sense. I know how to behave around dogs as I am a dog trainer.
A dog is a pack animal, the man the woman and the dog made up the pack. The man is pack leader, woman is second in the pack and dog is lowest pack member. Suddenly a new pack member appears, the dog is now confused, who is lowest in the pack ?? The dog must be shown he is the lowest by feeding the baby before the dog, and letting him see this every time. Man and woman eat first, baby eats second, dog eats last and therefore is lowest in pack. The dog in this case has done nothing wrong in his own mind, he is fighting the newcomer to see which of them is lowest in the pack.
Absolutely horrific. I’d be the first to criticize owners when reading stuff like this but by the sounds of it was a smaller dog. In hindsight should have never been allowed happen but easy to see how it did. My heart goes out to them.
Awful story.
Dachshund-terrier can be little aggressive fucks originally meant to hunt out badgers
>She added that he lived outside, but if the door was open, he would try to get in.
Its not the kind of dog that would live outside.
Shocking that the Father wouldn’t get rid of it even after witnessing the early issues, at the end of the day, it’s an animal and they’re unpredictable. Poor little thing.
Extremely hard to read. It’s tragic and the family have an impossible struggle now. As someone who had a baby recently and we have a dog I really really struggle with this story – it’s tragic but awful by the people too.
We kept our dog in a metal pop up pen for the first few months whenever we weren’t actively holding the baby – meant she needed a lot more walks but you can’t trust them no matter what. It was 33e on Amazon…
It doesn’t fix anything but I have to agree that this was avoidable. The snarl when first introduced was a huge giveaway of care being needed. That said even a dog that just ignores / sits beside could still hop up and accidentally smother a baby cuddling into the warmth – so yeahhhh they screwed up here.
Our dog coming in the back door is like a bottle of cans being dragged across the floor thanks to the clatter of their nails – it would be unlikely they weren’t aware that the dog was “inside” the house.
A dog that size being kept outside must’ve been freezing their bits off which doesn’t bode well for the dogs care even before all this – hence always coming inside… plus who puts a newborn baby down without a monitor – even the crappy vtech ones are cheap 🙁 ? Fecking hell this is all kinds of tragic.
