Now if we can kick them out of government that would be nice.
I do think that Churches should be free to be selective on who can get married in the church, and we can’t exactly force them to do it. Given that non-Church weddings are available it’s not like anyone is being prevented from getting married because of this choice by the churches.
That said, there are gay members of the congregation at my local church and they are welcomed there and there is an ideological conflict between welcoming gay people into the church but not marrying them. The churches being old and steeped in tradition means that they will always lag behind culture, but I don’t think that they’re really that far behind and I would not be surprised if they did start to allow gay marriage in the church in the upcoming few years.
As Jeremy Hardy once observed, if they don’t like same sex marriage then no one is going to make them have one.
The same church that started because Henry wanted to divorce his wife?
I mean… should they? I think the bible pretty much says you shouldn’t.
I refuse to back CofE bishops in the HoL, and that doesn’t make the slightest difference either.
If Jesus had nothing to say about it, you should infer he didn’t have much of a problem with it. He did however say pay your taxes, and don’t think you’re special just because you’re a rich bastard.
Their imaginary friend gets really cross when the people he’s supposed to have created keep doing stuff he enabled them to do. Maybe he should impregnate another woman with himself so he can live on earth and then we can kill him again so he’s not angry anymore. That’s sort of how it works isn’t it?
I thought this petition was interesting, look at the map and see where the signatures are coming from, tower hamlets, Bradford, Leicester, Luton, I wonder what the common denominator is…
I haven’t been to a wedding at a church in over 20 years. Been to a lot of weddings at registry offices, a barn, a golf club and so on. In other words non denominational weddings are pretty much the norm, also given that in the last census there are less Christians than ever in this country, why does anybody care what they think.
If their silly little club about sky dad and various other fairy stories want to become even more irrelevant than they are already, let them carry on. You do not need their approval, it’s beyond me why anyone is seeking it.
There is a lot of stuff in the bible that contradicts a lot of other stuff pretty directly, or is mistranslated so who even knows if according to a poorly written but admittedly well selling work of fiction ,being gay is ok or not? But more to the point, at this point who gives a damn. Only pretty fundamental Christians, who tend to frown upon homosexually anyway, although their attitudes to child abuse seem pretty laissez-faire to say the least. Just leave them in the past and move forward.
Good. For them to endorse gay marriage would be a spineless capitulation to secular values.
Don’t get me wrong, I support gay marriage, but that doesn’t mean I think the Church should.
I mean isn’t the monarch head of the church of England still? Doesn’t that mean that Charles could literally just go “yea gay marriage is fine” and that’s the end of it? Isn’t that why Henry made the monarch head of the church so he could change rules to what he wanted?
High ranking figures if the church don’t support something completely at odds with their religion… is this supposed to be scandalous?
If it goes against their religious beliefs why not live and let live?
Why would someone want to get married under a religion which would see them slaughtered anyway?
For all the people kicking off – how about getting Islam or any other Abrahamic religion to back something that is specifically prohibited in their belief system?
I’m not against gay marriage at all – it’s already allowed, and that’s great. It doesn’t have to be in a church/mosque/synagogue…
Its ok, more than half the country doesn’t care about the church anymore.
And with this the church of England will die a little faster.
This isnt the only issue but its symptomatic of the larger issue. The majority of those who hold power in the Church of England, and those whose voices have the most sway, are staunchly opposed to any kind of change outside of their idealised version of church. Which is an hour on Sunday in a fancy building with ‘respectable people’ repeating the same dogma as 50 years ago with very little variation.
Why would people want to spend time in a space and community which actively resents their existence and doesn’t cater to them? Children’s services are relegated to once a month, if at all, and sunday schools are near non existent due to a lack of volunteers. Teenagers and Young Adults, many of who actually have an actual passion to help in communities (you know, like Jesus advocated) aren’t supported or facilitated and are driven away by views like this.
And its exactly the ones who complain about falling attendance and standards in the church, that are actively blocking anyone who actually want to put the work in to change the way church is done to actually facilitate life.
Now we can argue as to whether it’s a good thing or not, but I know this is the reason I stopped engaging with christianity spiritually. There are people who are Christians who actually want to help and are accepting, but they feel like a minority.
Why dont the gays just not get married in a church then saves all bother
Whatever
I am a man who likes men and I don’t need the church to live a happy life. I damn sure wasn’t going to have a Christian wedding anyway
Everyone loves freedom, until people are free to do something you don’t like. If the Church of England don’t believe in gay marriage, they should not be forced to conduct gay marriage services. There are plenty of other Christian denominations and churches that will marry gay couples if they want a religious marriage, and plenty of non religious marriage services if they don’t.
And as a country that is tolerant of people’s beliefs we should respect that.
Remember the bishops aren’t saying “ban gay marriage in the U.K.” they’re just saying they won’t be doing it.
Christians can’t change Christianity. If they did back gay marriage then they wouldn’t be following Christ any more.
The Church of England looking at the declining amounts of Christian’s in the UK “Hmmm I wonder if there’s a way we can make ourselves EVEN more irrelevant?”
Why should they?
They have a religious doctrine to follow. Why try to drag the church into this.
The state allows gay marriage.
That should be enough.
Breaking news: Followers of barbaric bronze age mythology continue to be arseholes.
Now we just do what Henry did, and make our own church with our own rules.
To be fair, they think there’s a man in the sky the daft twats. I’d think their opinion of two people in a loving relationship is an alien fucking concept to the stupid tools they are.
If C of E refuse to carry out marriages which are legal, they should have the right to conduct marriages removed from them, and require a civil celebrant to legalise their ‘marriages’.
Same for any other faith which won’t marry those who can legally marry.
And once again the secular world has to drag the church kicking and screaming to progress and humility
Speaking as a gay man, why would I want to get married? It’s a religious ceremony, a religion which expressly rejects me. It’s like you’re actively trying to join a homophobic club, why?
If it’s for the legal rights then I’d just have a civil union, and no one can stop me having a party and exchanging rings.
Good for them. I am an atheist and don’t understand hating someone for who they’re attracted to HOWEVER:
Finally some Christians who have the backbone to admit that The Bible doesn’t like homosexuality and it’s forbidden.
Why I may not agree with their views I support their right to express them and admire their dedication to their faith rather than cowardly changing beliefs that have been held by their religion for thousands of years in order to become fashionable with the current views.
Feel free to downvote me but if you only allow people you agree with to voice their opinions, hate to tell you this but;
You’re a bit of a facist.
“Why does nobody come to church? Why do a record number of British people consider themselves to be atheist? Why do people saying we’re out of touch?” – The Church of England
Also the Church of England: this
The public is overwhelmingly in favour of gay marriage. Hell, the public are more in favour of gay marriage than they are about the CoE
If you don’t want people to think you’re out of touch, maybe stop being so blatantly, blindingly, deliberately out of touch
Eh, I’m not in the business of trying to convince people their God loves or accepts me.
Now that the issue has been settled by the State, what each church does or doesn’t do is up to them. Frankly, if it weren’t for the rest of the hypocrisy, I’d at least respect them sticking to their beliefs, as opposed to denominations that change their beliefs to keep up with the times despite claiming their God (and his word) is everlasting.
Would it really be a net positive if the CoE changed their position? For me, the less people who would be inclined to support them, the better. Their congregations are at death’s door. I’d prefer an empty church clinging to their ancient beliefs than the nefarious church with the guitar-clad youth pastor preaching love and peace to recruit vulnerable young people to their ranks.
Not sure why people would want to get married in a place they have never been wanted, doesn’t the book say something about gays?
I imagine this is tougher on the gay anglicans more than the community in general, they’ve been telling the church to fuck off for years at this point
What are you going to do force them to change their minds? What happened to freedom of opinion? If they come for someone they will come for you next.
It’s is a Church. Why should they be forced. The first thing to understand is what does a Church represent?
who cares if you don’t like their beliefs don’t be a Christian. signed a lesbian atheist
Now there’s a surprise, from the national association of hypocrites and make believe…..
