EU unveils gas market reform, doubling down on hydrogen

  1. The EU presented a new package of legislation for the gas market on Wednesday (15 December).

According to vice-president Frans Timmermans, Europe “needs to turn the page” on fossil fuels, replacing them with renewable and low carbon gases, like hydrogen.

Gases that bring about greenhouse-gas emission savings of at least 70 percent will be certified as “low carbon”.

No hard deadlines for a natural gas phase-out are included in the plan, but in a previous assessment, the Commission estimated gas consumption should reduce by 32 to 37 percent before 2030.

  2. Every time something about hydrogen is posted, the naysayers swarm it. People, yes, it requires technological and infrastructural changes and advances. But 2/3 of the world is literally covered in fuel. You need a solar panel, dip two electrodes into the sea, and put a jar over it.

Who the hell cares about production efficiency if you have unlimited raw materials and power to produce it?

We dont have battery tech to store meaningful quantities of excess green energy anyway, might as well use it to split water.

  3. Hydrogen will work for heating. Electricity storage is questionable, but hydrogen will also be a crucial part. Transportation will be electricity only.
