New plan for electric vehicle chargers every 60km across motorway network

  1. Meh, can’t see it happening to any great extent. What the article fails to mention is that the Government is providing the funding as a refund to the local authorities. They are covering just 75% of the cost. The local authorities have neither the resources or appetite to do anything with this at the moment.

  2. Itll be great being able to charge between the second and third largest cities in the country, ahh the ole cork to limerick motorway…oh wait, it dosnt exist. Build the fucking motorways first you useless cunts.

  3. I heard eamonn in the radio this morning, he said “we’re electrifying the HGV fleet” I can tell you in 4 bullet points why we’re not.

    1. Vehicle price. I bought a new volvo truck back in November, it cost me just short of 150k, the exact same model with an electric motor would set me back around 280k

    2. Range. 500km range is just not enough when you’re against the clock as regards delivery times, boats and driving time rules.

    3. Weight. My lorry weighs 9 ton. The EV version is 15 ton, that means 6 ton less payload

    4. Versatility. The EV truck is perfectly suited for working in cities supplying supermarkets etc, I could see a big company like musgraves using them as they pull on type of trailer doing one kind of work. Most hauliers will do a wide variety of work, a lot of it won’t suit an EV.

I’d definitely buy one if those points were addressed, but in the short term diesel will still be the best choice. I know a few hauliers are using bio diesel, others are using CNG and a lot of manufacturers are leaning towards hydrogen electric.

  4. Nice to see the motorway network is actually progressing again, now that Paschal has been swerved off away from transport.

Mind you, believe it when I see it.
