Emer O’Neill: Tommy Tiernan apologising over ‘racist’ gag was a very positive step

  1. I don’t like Tommy, I don’t think the joke was funny… but it’s like going to an Italian restaurant and expecting bacon and cabbage.

  2. I’m sceptical on whether a young Irish person would find themselves at a Tommy Tiernan show and not know what to expect. She didn’t even have a quick look on YouTube?

  3. Heard her on Newstalk yesterday saying we live in a “systemic racist country and world”. Pat Kenny didn’t even bother to press her on what she meant that. Anyway, she’s getting the attention she so desperately craves.

  4. I too want to claim offense and receive an hour long phone call. I found the anal sex segment of his show the other week offensive. Neither of them has my lived experience and they don’t know my arse’s experience and haven’t a clue what it’s been through nor what’s been through it… They made me feel as though my bottom fell out of the world

I feel like the quotation marks were misplaced in the post.

  6. Oh Tommy why did u apologise?? You’ve just given all dopes like her reasons to be offended for ever more. Comedy is over.

  7. Tiernan – who’s not very funny to begin with, tbf – misjudged this completely. I don’t care if your one is a dose or not; jokes that make a connection between black peoples and moneys are racist, massively ignorant and totally unwelcome in this day and age, whether r/Ireland agrees or not – it’s amazing that so many people don’t seem to realise or accept that. I can’t believe that Tiernan could think that this was A; okay, and B; not going to draw a hugely negative reaction. Absolutely idiotic.

If some fucking Brit comedian made that kind of snidey comment about ‘Paddies’ there’d be plenty on here who’d take a completely different view.

  8. I feel like she went to this gig known well that his material was close to the bone. To say she didn’t know what to expect given her line if work is hard to believe. From what I’ve read about the actual joke it was directed at those who fail to realise how comments like his joke go un noticed. Ah well, she got her 5 mins of fame
