This, for me, is why the Donohoe situation was important. Is there anything to stop a politician from falsely declaring contributions? We’ve seen that someone can do it, apologise for declaring incorrectly, and move on.
What if it seems like someone or a business gets a benefit from donating to a party or politician? Does the politician just apologise and it’s forgotten? For a country with some of the strictest lobbying regulations in the world we are seriously lacking in any repercussions.

Honest question here, was Pascal O’Donoghue in trouble because he made a mistake with the amount or because he didn’t declare it with SIPO?
Because (and open to correction here) Mary Lou McDonald did declare that she received this donation (from 2011) with SIPO, she was just wrong with saying it was given to her constituency office when asked last week.
By the way I think what Pascal O’Donoghue did was a mistake but the response from opposition TDs on it has been disproportionate.

I did find it strange that SF kept milking the Pascal situation and keeping it in the news. Normally for these kind of things rhe opposition stay about as quiet as the government to avoid this exact thing happening cus they know fine well they’re as culpable as anyone.
