Is this sign legal?

  1. Legal in the sense that it is allowed to be there.
    But it’s purely informational.
It’s not a fietstraat if the official zone fietstraat isn’t present.

But given that I know of a commune that writes gasboetes for a non existing zone 30 (the start of the “zone” only has a round speedlimit 30 sign), I wouldn’t be surprised if you got a fine if they catch you.

  2. The sign itself is not legal. That does not mean that this street is NOT a fietsstraat, that you are allowed to overtake bikes and that the maximum speed limit is not 30 kmh.

  3. Its not legal. Its just there for info, but there is no need to uphold anything that is on that sign. The only sign that you need to respect and where you are not allowed to pass cyclists, is the sign number F111. Its a blue sign with a white cyclist in front and behind it a red car.

  4. This particular sign holds no legal merrit, but if it is a fietstraar then it’s likely painted on the ground with a proper sign. In that case this ‘sign’ is just an information board they added because people were stupid.

  5. No, but if it’s a real fietsstraat there’s probably a different sign in the vicinity. This one just explains what it means.

This also clearly shows that the concept of a fietsstraat is silly and unclear. Just make a zone 30 and create a new sign that shows that you can’t overtake bicycles. Clear for everyone. Now you just see a sign with a bicycle and think “hmm there must be cyclists around”, if you didn’t know what a Fietsstraat means.

  6. Not “illegal”, but it doesn’t hold any legal grounds. This is very likely just a reminder of the rules and the actual, legit Fietsstraat plate will be at the beginning of the street.

  7. As others have said, yes it is legal in the sense that the city has every right to place the sign there. This sign alone, however, cannot *force* you to respect what’s written on it. It’s an informational sign, meant to explain or remind a different, official sign which should be there as well – probably at the entrance of the street.

  8. out of curiosity: Can a cyclist catch a cyclist in this case? Or is this too much an autistic point of view?

  9. It sure is.

An additional little known fact, however, is that a prohibition to overtake bikes in a car has alresdy been in place for a very long time, albeit indirectly. Cars can only overtake bicycles under the condition that they leave 1.5m of space between car and bicycle during overtake. In some streets this is rarely possible, meaning that a car cannot legally overtake, regardless of whether “fietsstraat” applies.

  10. Yes and no, this sign isn’t enough; if the actual sign is somewhere earlier you gotta follow that one either way

  11. Hier zit die boze vrouw/etende kat-meme in. Fietsstraat! Verboden fietser in te halen. Versus Fietsstraat verboden! Fietser in te halen!

  12. What if a cyclist just goes ridiculously slow? Like 5km/h?

To answer the question, the sign is not the official one but there will probably be an official one nearby and this is just a more visible sign. I’ve only seen the „fietsstraat“ in Flanders, not yet in Wallonia, possibly there are some in Brussels.

  13. A couple of weeks ago I saw a car behind a cyclist in a fietsstraat. Behind the car, 3 cyclist (electric bikes off course) were ringing their bells and like…1m behind the car. They did this because the car was driving too slow and they couldn’t pass the car.

I called them out on that shitty behavior. Fucking assholes.
