Thank you very much for the really helpful feedback on the last post! We have cut the journey time, have decided to stay out of the major cities, are staying longer in each location.
The map shows where the overnight stays are in red, and for how many of the days.
Some info that might be important:
* Will have 8 full days in June
* Flying from the UK (only a couple of hours flight) into Oslo, and back out of Oslo
* Hired a car for the entire trip duration
* Only myself (25) and partner (26) travelling,. We’re more interested in the nature/views rather than busy cities
This time, we’re looking for change of route suggestions if we’re missing something interesting/pretty nearby. Also interested in finding good places to stop on the way, shorter hikes or activities to do or anything you think we shouldn’t miss 🙏
Massive thank you again 😊
In Måløy, there is Kannesteinen. You can’t see all, but this is a very special rock…
You can do a short hike called Formokampen near Otta, which lets you see both Rondane nasjonalpark and Jotunheimen nasjonalpark on a clear day. Also see Snøhetta viewpoint near Dombås, its nice.
You should go to Florø so you can turn around and leave somewhere with pleasure.
I’ve hit most of this route over the years, you’re in for a treat as long as fog doesn’t get in your way
Maybe you’re not into birds, but one of the most memorable trips I did as a kid was going to Runde outside Ålesund to see the puffin birds and do some hiking.
June and July is top season.
If you don’t want to drive the same route twice, you can drive from Kristiansund and to Oppdal. Dovre doesn’t start too far from Oppdal, so you’ll get the whole thing with you. Then you drive past Snøhetta, which you might have heard about. There is a viewpoint there: [https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/viewpoint-snØhetta/181161/?lang=primary](https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/viewpoint-snØhetta/181161/?lang=primary)
Go about 800 km further north
Looks very similar to our trip in July 2023. Except we will hit Runde, Bergen. And not make it all the way to Kristiansund or Jessheim.
The atlantic road is not worth the extra travel time
the drive from Geiranger to Åndalsnes is insane! the trollstigen mountain pass and the surrounding mountains are breathtaking
Tenk å droppe Sunnmøre 🥴
I strongly urge you to stop in Aurlandsdalen. One is the prettiest hikes in Norway
Only change I would make is taking the old mountain pass from Stryn to Geiranger, its only open during summertime, which is why you cant plan a route through it. It is slated to open by the end of May, and should provide a considerably better trip than just going through Grodås-hellesylte, which isn’t the most scenic route if you ask me. https://gyazo.com/17b2aa6c553885bc21ae243bb062149c
Do you have anything in particular planned for Lærdal since to have two nights there?
I think I’d recommend driving Hardangervidda (Geilo/Eidfjord), crossing Hardangerfjord bridge before going to Voss. Since you’re into nature you could stay in a tourist cabin (Fagerheim and Dyranut is by the road) in the mountain and have time for a full day hike (for instance around Krækkja). A stop at Vøringsfossen is also definitely worth it, almost in any weather.
This of course means skipping Aurland/Flåm altogether, but since you have a rather long drive with a ferry anyway I assume you’re bit stopping there for too long?
me and my family went on almost this exact trip in 2020
I would recommend going through Bud on your way to Atlanterhavsveien, its a nice coast road. Also, if you want to hike, Trollkirka is a nice trip into a marble cave. Also, if you have watched Ex Machina, you could spend a night at that hotel (Juvet landskapshotell)
I have a very similar trip planned with almost the exact same stops along the coast but in April! Since some of the mountain passes might be closed we’re not sure what to expect. Instead of renting a car in Oslo, we’re taking the train to Bergen and then renting a car to travel north as far as Kårvåg.
Have fun with your trip OP!
Have a great trip!
I live not far from the airport. When going from Gardermoen to Gjøvik I would prefer the route Minnesund – Toten RV33. That goes along west side of Mjøsa (the largest lake in Norway). Its faster and not just forrest. The view is great. A small taste of fjords🙂
On the return i would stay on E6 from Lillehammer to Gardermoen. It will take you on the east side of Mjøsa and by that time you av been on enough small winding roads.
Beside from that I think your plan look great.
Btw. You are passing my house twice.
So sad to see my beloved Trondheim removed from the journey, but as it isnt really a touristy place i totally support it.
You must go to Vossevangen. It’s just a 25min drive out of your plotted course. Beautiful nature and town there! Then when you arrive in Voss take the gondol up to the mountain(or walk)!
Ålesund is much more beautiful than Molde.
Just a few km from Molde there is Julneset Fort. If a small hike is not a problem, you will be rewarded with a nice view from WW2 fortifications. I would recommend it.
You should stop at «Brumunddal»
Very good changes.
If you can, find accommodation every day instead of making all the reservations ahead of time. This way it’s much easier to make small adjustments on the way
The Atlantic Road is beautiful!! Absolutely worth the drive!
If you have time when you’re near Loen, a scenic detour to take a walk around [this](https://maps.app.goo.gl/xMTni9akGmiYUbHj9?g_st=ic) little park is highly recommended. Waterfalls and glaciers are seen from the scenic viewing points within the campground area. It’s mountain scenery without a major hike being needed to view it. The drive along Lovatnet is also beautiful, and small power boats can be rented from the campgrounds along the lake, if you have time and would like to get out on the water.
Lillehammer! Excellent choice … although living here maybe I am biased! Check out Hafjell, Hunderfossen and the ski jump when here!

I’d skip the Lærdal tunnel and drive over the mountain instead. It’s just a long dark hole. Stop by [Stegasteinen](https://maps.app.goo.gl/PgM5fwV4vimpvaH17?g_st=ic) on the way.
