Has any one got a BER assessment done ? Heard it on newstalk today. This is what I’ve been advised to do. Any advice ?

  1. Jesus I’d hate to see what they consider expensive. Getting triple glazed windows and a heat pump system into an already existing house would cost 25k.

  2. If your attic isn’t insulated I’d start there. Cheapest thing you can do and tends to make a big difference.

Windows and doors next if the ones you have are old and draughty. Modern double glazed is fine.

After both those things are done I’d look into insulating the walls by either pumping them or wrapping the house. If the windows and doors are shite then I can’t see this being as effective, which is why you should do the other two things first.

Those 3 things will give you a very comfortable house.

  3. House built in the 1960s – semi-d

We got beaded cavity insulation a few years ago (10+ years ago).

We have lagged all pipes, and lagging jacket in tank

We got a BER mid last year and implemented a couple of the tips, to keep within our budget. Got a new front door – composite, triple glazed. The windows are fine (double glazed that we got put in when we moved in – 17 years old at this stage). We also replaced our old open fireplace with a stove.

He suggested a thermostat radiator valves which we’ll look into.

We keep the boiler serviced once a year or thereabouts. We have been told it will need replacing in next year or so probably.

  4. I wouldn’t touch a heat pump until electric prices come way down. Also your house needs to be well insulated before installing one.
