>The Pochupei family have no intention of returning to their home city of Mariupol in Ukraine.
The barbarians wiped Mariupol off the map, there is nothing to return to.
And we welcome those who wish to stay. Hope they can build a new home and life here.
And they’re very welcome, Eastern Europeans have made great contributions to Ireland. Also, pointing out 11 months ago that this was inevitable was neither racist or xenophobic, despite the commentary at the time.
Lots of them don’t have homes to go back to because a vicious old prick half a world away had an ego problem and decided that firing rockets at their homes would make him feel good.
Those who can speak English will no doubt be tempted to stay in Ireland. Why? Ukraine has no vocational training program for people looking to learn skills. Most of their wages are spent on food, public infrastructure collapsed even before the war, getting mental health treatment is difficult. For some of them this has been a blessing, although they would have preferred to leave the country under normal circumstances, not running from bombs. I got all this information by working with refugees in these countries. Ireland with all it’s problems seems like the best thing they can get.

The reconstruction will be difficult and it will mostly be done by pressure on wages influenced by high unemployment and huge public debt. Those who lost their houses (a very important cultural factor as many inherited homes built until 1991) will have lost all their ties to Ukraine.
Vast majority won’t go back. You’re not going to come here for 6/12 months, have enough english to get by, see the much improved quality of life they have here and then go back to Ukraine where the average wage is something like 400 euro a month.
I have no problem with them staying but we were fed a lie once again by those saying it’s just for 6 months until the war is over.
Even if the war ended tomorrow, it wouldn’t be possible for many to return for up to a decade.
UXO clearance is going to take years and years, and that has to be done before they can actually rebuild.
For anyone wondering: UXO = UnExploded Ordnance.
Bombs that landed but haven’t gone off yet, basically. And a lot of them are in cities and towns, especially in eastern Ukraine which is where a lot of refugees are from.
I have fallen in love with the Ukraine people.the way they have been trolling the Russians has been very Irish.they are a strong bunch of people and and for me are very welcome.I think they will fit in great here.Fuck you russia!
I welcome everyone from any colour or creed so long as they respect their new home and try to integrate.
It’s hard to imagine what these people have gone through, everything you knew wiped away by a mad man’s obsession.
Fleeing to a strange country is stressful itself, I wish all of them a happy and safe new life.
Doubtful they would have went back even without a war given the economic disparity between the two countries.
What pisses me off is the lads who are saying Ireland for Irish first.
Like these poor people get bombs dropped on them, houses distroyed, history, memories and stories are all lost during this time. They will never recover from this emotionally or mentally. I hope they can find happiness and safety if they plan to stay and I welcome them here. Ireland is only getting more diverse, and though its for a sad reason, but it’s nice to see more Ukrainians and such.
This is a massive issue that was spoken about at the start of the war and still doesn’t seem to have been planned for.
A lot of these people have nothing to go back to and the war could go on for years to come.
We’re already at a point where we can’t even offer temporary accommodation to new refugees with O’Gorman saying that refugees will end up on the streets in a few weeks time.
So where do all these people go? They can’t live in temporary accommodation/on the street forever and there isn’t enough houses being built to accommodate the Irish population without the influx of refugees, so where does this end up?
If my house was rubble I’d probably think same tbh
Fine Gaelers want them enslaved to landlords for life, they’ll be lucky to manage a holiday back home.
Fair enough. I am an immigrant ( recieved citizenship in 2021 ) and my family have contributed to this country. As long as you contribute to our nation, I am fine with you staying.
Came over here, learned English, got a job, moved out of state supplied housing.
What a fantastic story. They’ll contribute more to this country than many of the people complaining about immigrants.
It only seems the European countries are taking in refugees, are any other countries taking them in?
Did anyone actually believe they would be returning home? It was clear it was a disingenuous claim from the start.
Refugee tax then, they come and see our social welfare system and lick their lips
This will be the biggest boost to Irish looks since the Spanish sailors.
Basic rules for any mass migration really. Human being tend to set up roots wherever they set up and have a strong tenancy to stay there unless they genuinely want to move.
I once spoke to a British woman who’s husband fought in World War II and sent her to South Africa to be safe. When he died in battle, she simply didn’t return to the UK and continued to stay in Africa.
That’s life. We’re not tied to a location just because we grew up there.
I hope they can find a better life here, it breaks my heart how much these people have lost, as many irish left when our country was in pieces, I hope these ukrainians can build a better life here
thus making the housing crisis worse
what would happen if all Irish born citizens around the globe moved back home? Country would be crippled. Maybe think about that while you complain about a few Ukrainians.
Either way, I think it is still very important to remember that 50 years from now, there’s going to be a President and Politicians in Ukraine, that are all in this country right now. They will remember their time in Ireland.
*Sidenote And still Germany is humming and hawing about giving the Leopard 2 tanks.
Give them out ta fuck. Give them everything conventional they need to win this war asap.
I mean yeah logically why would they?
Even before the war, Ukraine’s gdp per capita was that of bloody Mongolia, corruption was/is rife and economic opportunity was little. Add a whole war into the mix and things get worse.
The only reason for going back is family but given how extensive the refugee scheme is, I would make an educated guess that most people went to wherever with their family.
At the very least, it makes sense to stay in an EU country, naturalise and then if you feel like it, go back. Plus Ireland passport also has the added benefit of free movement with the UK.
Not hating or anything, it’s obviously pretty unfortunate that there’s a war going on, just saying that logically if makes no sense to go back even when the war finishes.
The way this stops is : Ron DeSantis gets elected USA President next year he is going to get Russia and UKraine together and tell UKraine : give up the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern UKraine, they are full of Russians separatists anyway, you can’t control them and they hate you, commit to not joining NATO or EU but we will commit to protect you if Russia attack. Don’t agree to these terms and I’m going to turn off the tap on hundreds of billions of military aid and Russia will take you over in 2 weeks.
We have a mother and two kids living with us, she’s very happy living with us and there’s quite a level of trust between us, but she really wants to find a place of her own. The problem In my town there’s literally nothing to rent even if she could afford to, there are people with vacant second properties in the town one of whom who said she would rent the property only for 1100 p/m no less which is out of her price range even though she could pledge the property and be earning 800 p/m tax free she won’t let the property. We’re more than happy to let her stay here for the foreseeable future but it’s very unfair knowing there’s vacant properties around.
