How about taking off shoes (only socks, clean, no smell) and putting them directly on the seats? Is that considered as a no-go?
A friend was jelled at and hit with a walking stick by an old lady for doing that many years ago “Nimm t’ chnoche abe!”

Hi, I work on SBB trains, this is fine. If there’s no space, I’ll ask them to take their feet down. That’s never the case in the first class though.
