Woman who died after developing hypothermia ‘couldn’t afford to heat her home’

  1. I am so *fucking done* with this bullshit country, and its bullshit Selfservative government.

Get these criminals out of office so we can start treating people with dignity, instead of as a statistic.

  2. Some might argue that this is just one person, that is still one too many in a country as rich as the UK. Heating is hardly a luxury so it a shambles that we have people in this country so poor they cannot afford something so essential. We need to have a serious look at ourselves and ask if this is the society we want to build for the future, because it certainly seems that is the way we are determined to head down.

  3. Not living in nor a citizen of the UK.
The rot you see in the UK is also prevalent in so many other nations.
The cheating, lying political class and their capitalist masters have grabbed our collective throat.

  4. People are getting sick from the cold homes. People are getting sick from thr mould in their homes cus they are cold.

    This will be the first.

  5. At least the gas companies didn’t lose any profits for their CEOs and paid off politicians. The board members never had to suffer, I’m sure they’re blissfully aware of the damage they were knowing going to cause.

  6. I’ve used 40% less gas than the same period 2 years ago. Yet my gas bill was double what it was then.
While I’m fortunate I can absorb the cost, it’s impacting other things and is fucking scandalous.
There is only so long I can maintain it.

How the others are managing is beyond me.

  7. Important amendment in CAPITALS:
The country is no longer rich, the rich are rich and year by year amass more of our money for themselves. Worldwide 63% of the $42 trillion of new wealth created since 2020 WAS GRABBED BY THE RICHEST 1%. Billionaires fortunes went up £1.7 million for every $1 earned by the bottom 90% (Source: Oxfam) and we can safely assume the top 10% grabbed 99% off that $42 trillion IMHO

  8. UK 2023.

Government minister dodging tax on £27 million.

People freezing to death while they do absolutely nothing about it.

  9. This will probably get misinterpreted as victim blaming or something, but please hear me out.

The headline says she couldn’t afford to heat her home, but the only evidence for that is something written in her hospital notes. Probably based on something she said. But is it actually true, or was she tragically mistaken?

Unless she was on a prepayment meter and literally didn’t have any cash to feed it, she could have continued heating her home.

She might have ended up in debt, but she would still be alive. She might not even have ended up in significant debt, with her state pension, possibly a private pension, and the government help. She might simply have ended up with a negative balance on her bill that she would only have to pay via slightly increased monthly payments in the future.

If she owned the house, which might well be the case, worst case she could have gone for equity release of something similar if the debt really needed paying urgently.

To be clear, I am not blaming her for what happened at all. And I don’t know for sure whether these options were closed to her for other reasons. And I do understand that many people would hate to get into debt, and feel that they owe it to their children to pass their house on to them.

My point is that we see stories like this that claim that an old person had *no choice* but to freeze to death. And we just accept that with no evidence, even though in fact they might have had other choices available to them. Difficult choices perhaps, but still better than freezing to death.

Other old people reading these stories are going to end up thinking that they too have no other choice. When some of them probably do.

  10. Globalisation has been good until its not we invested so much into it and now we are suffering as we are being ripped off by the global markets we so coveted selling off our resources and strategic infrastructure thats now being sold back to us at 10x the price those who got us here should be in jail.

  11. I’ve been saying this is a massive problem for years, and everyone I speak to has no grasp on how common this is in the UK.

I’ve not had central heating or any heating (or even a boiler) for a decade now. Partly because of my landlord stealing the boiler to use himself, and partly because I’ve been unable to fork out for a new one and all the fixing needing to be done. I’m able to live this way (as horrible as it is in winter with no warmth) due to young age and mental resilience, but these poor souls can not physically withstand the elements, not a child and certainly not the elderly.

It’s disgusting, their abhorrent behaviour needs to be stopped.

  12. Another one for Rishi’s kill count.

Got to beat Boris’s high score to become Top Tory!

Liz Truss’s score was just killing the currency in a week.

  13. How many have to die before we riot? Will it be the point when enough children die that will get people off social media and into the streets? What will it take do you think?

  14. I mean what has happened here is horrible, don’t get me wrong, but think about it this way. Some already VERY wealthy people will get ever so slightly wealthier. So it’s not *all* bad news.

  15. It’s stuff like this that is responsible for excess deaths not the vaccine but rather instead of being outraged over a real problem people prefer to be outraged over a made up problem

  16. I saw a really sad one a few years back. Similar. She was thirty-something, and died of hypothermia while her 3 kids were at school. Yeah real civilized country we live in.
