ELI5 – Why does De Lijn send a warning? Why warn if you want to catch people riding without a ticket?

  1. Because they will probably only check a couple of vehicles but that message will make sure that people will buy a ticket all afternoon

  2. Same as with the speedchecks by the police on the highway: they announce it so you have the impression that they organise this regularly. They also don’t announce *all* checks. They want to make you feel it would be wise to buy a ticket because they are very active in enforcing it.

  3. The STIB/MIVB do it too. It’s a tax on being stupid. If you read that and still don’t buy/bip your ticket, you’re a moron.

  4. Small ad makes a lot more people buy tickets to avoid a fine. Spend a bit of that money on a couple inspectors who do probes. Profit.

The goal is to get people to pay and with less effort.

Same with speed tickets, if they announce it a lot less people will speed just in the off case they pass by a checkpoint.

It also makes people reflect on their choices.

  5. Iemand ervaring met een controle wanneer je een abonnement hebt maar deze niet scant? Ik heb een van mijn werk maar laat deze liever zitten in de rugzak voor een controle op de trein, wegens het soms verliezen van deze kaart..

  6. They don’t want to write out fines. They want you to buy a ticket.

If the announce these checks on a regular base people thet don’t pay for they’re rides are more inclined to do so.

  7. So that you know to catch a bus earlier because chances are they’ll hold back the whole bus and you’ll be late /s

  8. Because if they don’t warn beforehand they will have so many people riding without a ticket, they it will block the busses for too long and they will have to spend days afterwards doing annoying paperwork

  9. This might also be a way to pull data. They can, for example follow up how many people bought a ticket compared to the same period the weeks without notice…

  10. It’s laughable. I take the bus daily and the amount of people that aren’t paying is nuts. I haven’t had ‘controle’ for years until last ftiday… on a completely empty bus at 8pm. I take very high traffic lines (connections to Brussel and the airport).

  11. There is something in here that triggers me. Hear me out. I’m Flemish, so it is my mother tongue.

Now living in an English speaking country.

The sentence ‘Rijden zonder geldig vervoerbewijs kan duur zijn.’ is such a weird way to say that you are required to have a valid ticket.

Why is this not more explicit?

  12. Their recent campaign was about freeriding, and had me realize they probably lack capacity to actually check so yeah. This feels similar, probably they hope the communication has more effect than the actual (unexisting?) checks.

  14. I think because fines aren’t part of their core business model unlike here in NL where they make it very easy to fine even when something was just unclear for the person (e.g. forgetting to check in or accidentally scanning your ov twice)

  15. I’ve been taking de lijn daily for about 8 years now. Before my employer payed the subscription I almost never payed a ticket.
I got checked only once in these 8 years & I did send a text that time. During the check they claimed that I sent the text when they got on the bus (which I didn’t not my fault the stops are not even a minute apart).
De Lijn did not answer my emails about the incident, once I paid they did respond. Claiming I have been on that bus for over 30 min & the phone number was not correct.
I eventually got a refund after 1 month.

TLDR: got checked once in the last 8 years, got fined even though I paid. They were claiming I paid when they stepped on the bus. De Lijn is a joke.

  16. As many have already said it’s a way to ensure the percentage of legal rides goes up one day. Whether they actually check or not and whether this is only tactics is up to debate, but it definitely will result in more tickets being bought and therefore will give them a better estimate of the actual number of passengers.

This in turn enables them to assess how many people ride illegally on average, and gives them scores of data.

  17. Prevention. Just like the labor inspection has these flash inspections. They announce in which sector they’ll do their inspections during a period of time.

  18. It’s the day that put fear in the hearts of every controller. As they risk their health just doing their job.
