Russia wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine without Brexit, suggests Guy Verhofstadt

  1. Pretty sure Verhofstadt is in a symbiotic relationship with the British press now. After all, what’s the point in trolling without an audience?

  2. >Russia wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine without Brexit

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in 2014, before Brexit.

  3. The biggest problem with Verhofstadt is that for some reason federalist flock to this guy without realizing that he’s a pseudo populist with a semi accurate moral compass at best.

  4. Hrmmm, I think Brexit weakened Europe but I think this is a bit of a stretch.

He was happy to invasion Crimea in 2014, and Georgia in 2008.

  5. Daily reminder that Verhofsh*t is part of ALDE, where Bulgarian party DPS is, DPS is most corrupt bulgarian party, full of oligrachs with close ties to Moscow. DPS is fighting against media freedom, rule of law and sowing corruption everywhere. In DPS there is even an olgarch sanctioned by Magnitski. Verhofsh*t is keeping his eyes closed shut on this Russian party in his alliance. He a big fat hypocrite

  6. lol, I swear these guys will try and use anything to take eyes away from themselves, and on to the UK. Its almost like Brexit has hit them harder than they want to admit

  7. This guy again… Among the first to be riling people up, he made a peaceful resolution between Russia and Ukraine even more complicated back in 2014.

Though I’m sure Brexit didn’t help the current geopolitical climate in any positive sense, but he’s not without blame.

  8. Highly speculative.

It’s also speculative to say for example the pandemic led to the Invasion. Putin isolated himself a lot and lost the relation to reality.

  9. If the Eu and the world had acted when he invaded in 2014 ( Pre Brexit) or let Ukraine into NATO then maybe …. Stop talking bollocks Guy !

  10. Russia have been in Ukraine since 2014, and virtually nobody (in power) gave a shit until very recently. We probably went further than most (at the time) sending troops to train them, supplying weaponry and so on, but even that wasn’t remotely close to enough. Most of the West watched and shrugged, just like we did when they did the same to Georgia not long before.

  11. Verhofstadt should mention in his thoughts that the invasion of Ukraine begun with the 2014 Krim annexion, long before Brexit. If he’s making such an insane point, he should at least get the underlying facts right. He looks foolish.

  12. >Mr Verhofstadt added: “A united Europe, certainly on defence matters, would make an enormous difference. I think maybe without Brexit, maybe there was no invasion. I don’t know.”
    >
    >The MEP, former leader of liberal alliance in the Brussels’ parliament, said he hoped the UK could still rejoin the EU – but conceded it was unlikely in the next five years.

Welp, the UK has been making noises about wanting to do defense collaboration with broader Europe more-broadly ever since exiting. Heck, during the Brexit process, even.

I mean, if Verhofstadt wants it and the British want it, I imagine that the difficulties in finding some form of defense collaboration are easier than in a Rejoin and could probably be done sooner.

  13. Guy Verhofstadt is not pro-EU, he is pro USE. An extreme liberal and someone that does not take into account realities. And a liar like Farage.

  14. As much as Brexit’s been an apparent disaster… This is horseshit.

At best, Russia probably thought it succeeded in destroying the unity of countries like Britain throughout the past few years and invaded Ukraine believing that our current polarizations and sociopolitical issues would make the invasion easier (never mind that Ukraine’s basically been kicking their ass anyway despite the lack of on-ground international help).

    At worst, it’s completely unrelated.

  15. They were hoping to have Trump get a second term for their invasion. That didn’t happen and they invaded anyway.

  16. Whatis it with these peoples self entitlement? The invasion started in 2014, and for the better part of 6 years barely anyone seriously talked about what was happening in the donbass. Now when shit really hit the fan, these people want to shoe horn them self in. Pathetic.

  17. Have to give him credit. He’s managed to blame everything on brexit. If he’s caught cheating on his SO, guess what he’s blaming? Those pesky Brits and their refusal to be governed by their European overlords! /s

  18. God I hate this fucking clown, fanatic ideologue that does much damage to the image of EU. The Belgians I’ve spoken too have told me he’s also a crook that did some pretty shady things while PM of Belgium.

  19. This is a ridiculous statement to make. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine started with the annexation of Crimea long before there was even a Brexit vote (not to mention their downing of flights and killing of EU nationals). If they want someone to blame for Russia’s notion that they could act with impunity then he needs to look closer to home and the EU’s appalling track record of appeasement. People like Verhofstadt and his opposites on the British side are why there was never going to be a sensible outcome for Brexit, which regardless of what you voted for, you would hope fully grown and experienced politicians on both sides should have been able to achieve. What an example they are setting.

  20. This guy is so dumb and annoying. Brexit had absolutely nothing to do with it, it’s just some sad and pathetic attempt to deflect blame on the EU’s own shortcomings.

  21. This is all nonsense … like Trump arguing in his presidency it wouldn’t have happened or Merkel being asked if it had to do with her not being chancellor anymore.

I think the reasons were rather the tensions and instability in Belarus, plus pressure from Nawalny which required some decoy and showing off of ‘strength’ that made Putin make the decision to invade Ukraine.
