Dog ownership rate in the EU

  1. I think in Sweden it is now illegal to leave your dog home alone for the day while you go to work. So dogs will have to go to daycare.

  2. Romania is very rural and everyone has a dog to guard the household, but they are not pets which is what may be implied by the title.

  3. Thank fuck i don’t live in Romania

Edit: Looks like i triggered the dog worshipping crowd lmao believe it or not, it’s possible for someone to not like dogs. Fucking deal with it.

  4. This actually seems accurate based on my neighbourhood alone.

We have 3 families with Golden Retrievers, 2 with Bernese Mountain dogs and 1 with a Saint Bernard.

Oh and the usual Bichons that you don’t even count.

We have a cat and people keep saying “why not get a dog though?” as their dog pulls them down the street in the pissing rain.

  5. Romania has a particular problem with finding homes for stray dogs, and dog charities often have to send dogs to adopted homes in other countries. I guess it’s because everyone who wants a dog in Romania already has one.

  6. Romanian here, I can explain. Unlike westoids, who are weirdos with no fences, we put a lot of accent on protecting ourselves. For people who live in houses, the first line of defence is the enormous front fence (which is made of metal/wood and concrete) and the metal/wood/barbed wire fences on the other sides of the yard. If a burglar/wild animal tries to get past the fence, the dogs will try to scare the intruder and alert the owner. Burglar alarms are expensive and high tech, and in the countryside they’re basically useless, dogs on the other hand are low maintenance and cheap, and they’re nice and friendly too.

  7. Hard to not own a dog here, they are everywhere and you just can’t help but adopt one of those poor puppies you find on the streets.

  8. Dogs are everywhere and we take dogs seriously. Haven’t realized that until I started travelling more around Europe. The fact most of our dogs are well trained and behaved also means dogs are allowed almost everywhere, incl. restaurants, cafés etc.

  9. The term “Ownership” must be applied very loosely when it comes to Portugal. I’ve never seen so many abused & neglected strays. I tried living their but the rampant neglect of animals in this backwards country made me move back home. This country is full of dark age, uneducated animal abusers.

  10. When I was a kid (I’m soon to be 32) I remember seeing a lot of people with dogs everywhere in the streets of France, nowadays I do not see that often.

Would be nice if we could see the evolution of animals ownership through time!
