A country run by real criminals and civilians so depressed and failed by a flawed education system that they have tarnished no one knows what to do and yet even violence won’t send a message
Soon you will have to rent per brick of your home.
RIP.
Suicide rates in the country are kept hush hush by the media – until it suits them.
I suspect there’s much more to this than some shitty clickbait tabloid is reporting.
This is so incredibly heartbreaking and something we are seeing more often these days.
I think many will try rationalise why she stayed and didn’t return home but realistically, those reasons are only known to her. All we have is possible theories.
– Maybe she felt going home means she failed?
– Maybe she couldn’t afford to go home (not everyone feels they can ask for help or their families might not be in a position to do so).
– Lack of sleep would also majorly impact someone’s mental state, I can get audio hallucinations if I don’t keep my insomnia under control.
– fatigue from food restriction, meaning finding it harder to carry out daily tasks, mixed with lack of sleep, easily can result in excessive depressive episodes.
I myself have hit some pretty dark points with the cost of living being so bloody insane (and I’m not in London) but I am fortunate enough to have parents I can move back in with for the time being; the only harm was to my own self esteem but I’ve accepted that it’s not a failing on my part but that the current economic climate is hostile and most people will have to make similar difficult decisions right now. I’m just one of the lucky ones that actually has options, not everyone will.
As Boris Johnson said, “Let the bodies pile high.” There will be much more of this kind of tragedy and I’m so appalled by it, rip sweet lady.
Yep. Will become ever more common. Who is going to pay your pensions then fuckers.
horrible…
And I am sorry to say that I do not think this is the only time this has happened. Disgusting.
RIP, you deserved better from our society.
First and foremost RIP Angel. She was a kind-hearted person with a dashing CV but the harsh reality took its toll.
This hits hard especially I am also from Hong Kong, settling here with the same visa.
For those who said why moving to London? Yes because Hong Kong is getting worse to the point people want to leave. Even though London (and the UK) have their own problems, yes – that wouldn’t stop us.
But one thing we always mention when coming to the UK is that we need to save up some money and cannot rely on shoestring budget. Otherwise we need to go back to HK (which is not an option especially for people with strong political sentiments)
I guess the whole issue spiralled very quickly, considering what we have been through since 2019 + Covid and all the pressure got the better of her.
When society places hundreds of proletarians in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death, one which is quite as much a death by violence as that by the sword or bullet; when it deprives thousands of the necessaries of life, places them under conditions in which they cannot live – forces them, through the strong arm of the law, to remain in such conditions until that death ensues which is the inevitable consequence – knows that these thousands of victims must perish, and yet permits these conditions to remain, its deed is murder just as surely as the deed of the single individual; disguised, malicious murder, murder against which none can defend himself, which does not seem what it is, because no man sees the murderer, because the death of the victim seems a natural one, since the offence is more one of omission than of commission. But murder it remains
We can solve the many systematic issues this country faces, but to do so we first have to acknowledge the problem; Liberal Capitalism and the cult of Individualism that drives it. The solution is a truly democratic economic and political system that includes an emancipated and educated workforce. To get there requires a form of direct action that doesn’t stop at pay rises that match inflation.
Killed by the Town and County Planning Act which is the main reason for high rents
On my reddit feed today:
Woman goes on 6 dates a week and has all meals paid for, doesn’t buy groceries for 2 years.
Woman kills herself due to lack of food, after trying to pay London rent on a charity salary.
These two should have met.
Also, the fact that mental health support is so poor in this country to the point where she would have either had to cough up a ton of money or been on a waiting list for god knows how long, I wonder how many people have ended up just like her because of being unable to support themselves through no fault of their own. Personally I’ve waited 3 months for a response from iTalk after having suicidal thoughts and have been placed on a waiting list indefinitely. Shithole country.
So sad. The UK is becoming a hard place to live. Even for those with jobs. This should not have happened. It shouldn’t be happening anywhere. Poor woman.
Although there is almost certainly more to this story than the headline makes out, £900 rent for a flatshare is *fucking* insane. Sadly, this won’t be an isolated case and things can only get worse as living costs continue to skyrocket.
This has started to happen to me – waking up in the middle of the night in a full-blown panic attack, it’s like another voice inside tells me “This would all be over if you just killed yourself” that makes me choke with panic
£50 short on the rent due tomorrow, shitting it because it means I’ll struggle to find a new place if I get kicked out of the place I’m currently at. I really feel for everyone in this position at the minute, and I honestly don’t know where we’re supposed to go from here
I know a friend who is struggling juggling two jobs while trying to find a better paying one and is paying super high rents for a room in London.
I live in Birmingham and I’ve even offered to let them live with me for free while they find a job here as I think your money just goes further in brum compared to London but they refuse as they love London so much and it’s not my place to judge but I just don’t think they can afford to no matter how much they want to.
The UK really needs to build homes at a much higher rate and compulsory buy empty homes
The government is responsible for her death, because they created these circumstances that keep us poor, keep rents high, and make our quality of life lower.
Wonder how her employer feels, knowing that she killed herself after not being paid enough to eat 3 meals a day. Not saying her suicide was their fault btw, I just wonder what their reaction was.
UK government allows untaxed trillions to be funnelled into our tax havens. Much of it linked to activities like the illegal arms trade, illicit drugs trade, human trafficking, fraud, tax evasion. “Oh but we have no power to intervene in the affairs of our own offshore territories or crown dependencies.” Yeah sure. The British empire persists through financial crime.
Yay. We have created a hellscape and will do fuck all to fix it.
While this is indeed sad, I have a feeling she is but one of many more we don’t and wont hear about.
This is a tragedy. We should have listened to Lee Anderson and moved to Central London where rent is only £750.
Remember if you’re contemplating suicide, giving up means the ruling class wins.
We need safe zones.City centre buildings owned by the Council.Converted to a safe zone.Accomadation ,kitchen,TV room and a few advisors.
People who are about to hit the streets can just phone up and get a room until they are sorted.Richy Sunak should resign if he can’t solve a simple problem like homelessness and high rents and low wages. Its a very easy thing to fix,but only if you want to.Tory dogma is that it’s a dog eat dog society where only the fittest survive.Thats ok if you’ve been born to the upper class and gone to Eton but it’s no good for 99% of the rest of us.
There are likely underlying mental health issues that cause her to be unable to function enough to pay for those and more likely felt like she was being forced to scan groceries for a career like everyone else is being pushed towards and bailed.
I completely understand this, I was made homeless for a period of time and secured a shelter for myself, which was of poor quality, yet it still absorbed the majority of my income.
I survived on noodles from amazon and eggs, which I cooked in the noodles; later I was unable to afford the eggs as they became too expensive for me.
Since the place I secured was a house share, I had the microwave that I purchased robbed by the other tennants, and later most of my equipment and sentimentals were also stolen, but that is another story.
The fact is, it is hard out there; I am and always be greatful for being alive, and ofcourse being born in this beautiful country (England); I wish that these situations didn’t exist and would be lying if I said I didn’t face a similar issues to the woman in the article.
I hope and pray that all in a similar situation have less trouble in the years to come.
We need to stand up to our government. I don’t understand why we bow down to these people. They don’t even try to hide their arrogance now.
I’m ok, don’t worry I’m working on it, but I’ve been feeling it too. Just today I was crying, trying to get a loan or credit card ( not going to get either anymore ), can’t sign onto UC, applying for any work I can within my means such as experience and distance, there isn’t much. Genuinely been feeling suicidal not that I will. I’ll get through.. but fuck. Fuck fuck fuck. I wish this woman and many others had my strength even though sometimes I hate having it. Hang on in there guys, times are **really** hard right now and they may get harder, but there will be a light. Things will get better again, at some point.
A lot of Hong Kongers are feeling culture shock moving to the U.K. and a few have opted for living in London which is incredibly expensive. Many thought that they would be greeted with open arms which they were but I don’t think many did any kind of research into where they were going or what was happening.
I see an article every once in a while about people that have moved there due to the protests and what not but haven’t realised what it was like. Some are let down, some are depressed and others are willing to move on and keep up with it.
There’s a lot of ignorance but romanticism about the U.K., I’ve had Irish and American friends be asked about life in England which left them both perplexed. The worst part is that some of them don’t have British friends who can help explain what life is there before they move, what the situation is economically and socially, but they’ve told “Come we’ll take care of you” only for that not to really be the case.
I’m saying this as I live in Hong Kong and have lived here for a long time and have encountered this before.
People like to rationalise suicide into a simple explanation but it’s never the case. I don’t think it’s right to guess the reasons behind suicide.
Another added to the death toll of capitalism. Truly saddening, she sought refuge from an authoritarian shithole and found herself in a thinly disguised authoritarian shithole, stuck between being bled dry by slumlords and business owners/employers and moving to the country and putting herself in physical danger from the old racist tories
Why the fuck is there no spike in new housing starts AND new social housing construction? Morons on Tory backbenches dislike the poor or something ?
Fucking personification of evil these arseholes are.
She’s depressed. It was mentioned she was afraid she couldn’t afford to continue on but it isn’t the case yet.
CoL crisis is real but it isn’t everything.
For people who deny how difficult it is live in the UK this is proof. This poor woman worked and couldn’t pay her rent/bills and barely ate. This would drive anyone no matter how strong to become severely depressed.. how can you function when you are cold and hungry.. this government is enforcing this on us and I’m afraid there will be lots more similar cases.. we are one of the richest nations this is a disgrace.. enough with these super rich hoarding all their wealth .. this economy does not work.. we need to create clearer tax laws to stop tax evasion. This Tory government is a cold and corrupt machine they have m blood on their hands. I urge them to do the decent thing and step aside! Haven’t they inflicted enough misery this decade! Enough is enough ! Time to protest in the name of the victims !
A lot of people from Hong Kong think they are semi fluent in English when they are not. People with English native tongue speak much slower and clearer in Asia. They also tend to use much less slangs.
A lot of immigrants can only score a minimum wage job at grocery stores or coffee shop despite having a bachelor or master (in some cases I have seen some with doctor degree) degree simply because they are unable to communicate in English well.
They expect to be making 6figures with their education/ background — They just can’t take it when reality hits. My bet is that she was the same case.
Living with grubby housemates you feel you can’t escape from at the edge of her means and falling into a depression which compounds all of the above. Can certainly empathise with that.
Fuck cost of living tbh, situation is so out of control.
>“I am only very sorry that the time she spent in England was clearly not a happy time for her. **England is enriched by having such strong links to Hong Kong and benefits enormously from having people from Hong Kong coming to live and work in England.**
>”Fion is an excellent example of the high calibre of person **who is so welcome in England**. She was clearly a very highly intelligent and dedicated humanitarian worker. The world is a much sorry-er place for not having her in organisations that help people in need. I hope her family holds dear to them the memory that Fion was someone who wanted to try and make the world a better place.
If England wants people to keep coming there to work, and if it truly welcomes them, then it should address the avoidable issues that led to this tragedy.
